Group vs Family Assessment Assignment Master of Social Work, Walden University SOCW 6121: Advanced Social Work Practice II One way to conceptualize family dynamics is as a sequence of exchanges among family members from a system's viewpoint, and there are numerous problems with this family dynamic. The communication Mother Ann and daughter Kate had at the beginning was poor, and you can see the poor nonverbal communication abilities from the start of the session till the end. The fact that family members are also in relationships with one another adds to the issues of the family dynamics since it forces them to take the needs of the entire family into account when making decisions. Poor communication and frequent arguments characterize the unstable connection between Ann and her daughter Kate. Kate asserts that her mother is constantly making up excuses for why she does not deserve or cannot have items. Group cohesion, social integration, group culture, and member communication and interactions all impact group dynamics. Since each member of the family has unique needs and goals, some of which may conflict with those of other members, group dynamics concepts could be useful in this situation. To ensure that the family runs smoothly, each member must learn to balance their needs with those of the entire group or family and to effectively communicate with one another (Toseland and Rivas, 2017). At the start of the session, Ann, the mother, appeared agitated and frustrated. Since Kate was more preoccupied with her phone and did not want to participate in the argument, Sean, the father, acted as a mediator between the two. While her father is calmer and spends time paying attention to Kate's feelings. Kate feels that her

mother is constantly shouting at her and arguing. There is a lack of cohesion within the family. The mother, Ann, was clearly bothered by her daughter's actions. The father, Sean, is a relaxed parent who refers to Kate as "just a kid." Compared to mother and daughter, the father and daughter have a closer relationship. Roles are defined by Toseland and Rivas (2017) as "shared expectations about the functions of individuals in the group." They are necessary for social integration because they enable the division of labor and the proper application of power. The roles are as follows: Ann is in charge, Sean is the assistant, and Kate is the troublemaker. Roles provide social control in groups by prescribing how members should behave in certain situations (Toseland and Rivas, 2017). The mother finds it frustrating that he is not as assertive with their daughter and would like him to be more disciplined. Comparing group and family dynamics, where both processes entail analyzing spoken and unspoken exchanges to understand the main sentiments of the group or family. Analyzing family dynamics is more difficult than group dynamics due to the additional level of interaction among the family (Toseland and Rivas, 2017). When evaluating group dynamics, a focus is usually made on the interactions that individuals inside the group, and as a cohesive one. Family dynamics are often assessed within a more intimate framework, such as in counseling. Group dynamics, however, are usually assessed in a public context (Toseland and Rivas, 2017).
