The story takes place in Beufort, North Carolina around 1959. The story tells of two teenagers who fell in love but have very dissimilar personalities. Landon, a seventeen year old high school senior whose father is a congressman and is frequently away from home. At his father’s urging and with the help of his best friend, the shy Landon becomes the class president. But one of the duties of class president involves him bringing a date in homecoming dance but he’s unable to find anyone. With nobody left to ask, he turns to Jamie Sullivan, who is the daughter of local minister, Hegbert. She’s the type who always carries a bible with her. The cool Landon kinda feels embarrassed being with this church going religious girl. But by the end of the evening he realizes that she was a good choice as a date. In the dance, her beauty mesmerizes Landon. He keeps seeing her but he doesn’t tell his friends about her. He still felt that his friends would make fun of him about dating such a person but this changes later. The story progresses and a couple of weeks later, she tells him that he cannot be in love with her. When asked for explanation, she tells him that she’s dying of leukemia. After a few days her condition worsens and she stops coming to school. The story has an astonishing ending. Landon first asks Hegbert’s permission and then asks Jamie to marry him. By this stage she was in wheelchair, too weak to walk….but she still walks down the aisle and marries landon in church full of people which was one of her dreams. A few days later, she dies. To this day, Landon is an old man. He still wears her ring on his hand.
