Gazaway 136 Ag Hall (405) 744-5395 [email protected] Office Hours Students may schedule appointments with the instructor during the week through the Unit Assistant in 136 Ag Hall or by calling (405) 744-5395. Class Meetings Section 359 - Mondays (lecture) & Wednesdays (discussion), 3:30 – 4:20 p.m. Section 360 – Tuesdays (lecture) & Thursdays (discussion), 4:00 – 4:50 p.m. Purpose of the Course The goal of this course is to expand student knowledge about career planning for experiences after undergraduate studies and to develop student skills related to conducting a job search or applying to graduate/professional schools. Course Objectives Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: ♦ Outline and evaluate resources related to immediate career plans ♦ Develop a job search or graduate/professional school application plan and timeline ♦ Develop a system for tracking progress of career applications ♦ Classify general skills and qualities desired by employers according to personal experiences ♦ Construct an effective résumé that markets skills and qualifications toward career goals ♦ Decide upon appropriate content and write an purposeful job search letter and /or state of purpose ♦ Construct a portfolio that demonstrates skills and/or qualifications for a career goal ♦ Coordinate appropriate dress for various career situations ♦ Utilize proper business etiquette in introductions and conversations ♦ Display proper etiquette in dining and reception settings ♦ Research prospective employers and/or graduate/professional schools ♦ Prepare for interview questions and demonstrate strategies for developing question responses ♦ Research and develop a realistic concept of salary potential for specific career options ♦ Evaluate career options with respect to personal career and life goals ♦ Execute acceptance of a career option using proper business etiquette ♦ Identify sources of continuing professional development related to their career goals For Whom the Course is Intended This course is intended for students enrolled in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR) who are preparing to search for internship positions or full- time jobs or for CASNR students who are preparing to apply for graduate/professional school. There are no prerequisites for this course. Course Assignments *Written papers should be typed, double-spaced with one-inch margins. Career Resource Critiques – Using the outline provided by the instructor, students should develop a critique of five specific resources for finding internship or full-time job opportunities or for gathering information about graduate/professional school programs. Resources selected should be specific to students’ immediate career goals. Career Goals & Action Steps – Each student should develop a set of S.M.A.R.T. career-related goals to accomplish by the end of their undergraduate education. Goals must be specific, measurable, action-oriented, realistic, and have a time frame. Register with CASNR Career Services & OSU Career Services – Each student should set up a Career Tracker account with CASNR Career Services and a “7 of 10” account with OSU Career Services by the deadline specified in the course schedule. Employer or Graduate/Professional School Profile* – Based upon students’ individual, immediate career goals, each student should select one employer or graduate/professional school of interest and develop a profile of that organization using the provided outline. Profiles should include information such as organizational mission, goals, competitors, locations, types of positions, etc. Résumé – Each student should construct a targeted résumé highlighting specific skills, qualifications and/or experiences for the student’s immediate career goal.
