THE EFFECTS OF THE PARENTING STYLES ON THE MENTAL HEALTH OF GRADE 12 STUDENTS OF DE OCAMPO MEMORIAL COLLEGE AMIDST THE PANDEMIC I. Introduction Parenting style states how you interrelate with your child as well as how and why you raise your toddlers the way you do. It’s inclined by your parenting beliefs, your childhood, your personality, and other factors. Parenting style is likewise driven by unintentional elements beyond your awareness. No matter how it cultivates, your parenting style affects your children’s mental health. Myriad parenting styles have been classified. However, four commonly known parenting styles have been in our culture as a Filipino. The four known parenting styles: authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and uninvolved or neglecting. Parenthood can be child-centered or parent-centered. It is also expressed as being cared for or being controlled. Certain parenting types succor youngsters be psychologically healthy as they grow and prosper whereas others can cause stress and psychological problems. Authoritative is recognized as the supreme parenting style, as it is child-centered. Parents are fond of their children. Authoritative parents form a happy interrelation with their children. Authoritarian parents are extremely controlling, they always instruct their children what to do. Their children have no say to anything their parents say. Permissive is a parenting style that parents want to be friends with their child rather than to be a parent. They let their kids have their freedom. They aren’t nurturing and affectionate parents as the authoritative type. A parent that doesn’t care about their kid is defined as an uninvolved parent or neglecting parent. Where their youngsters are unhappy because they aren’t cared for. II. Background of the study To find any complications from the parenting styles of parents that effects the current mental health of the Senior High Grade 12 students. Statement of the Problem The study aims to provide a broader perspective on the parent-child relationship, which can benefit the child and parent. Moreover, it aims to provide answers to the questions: 1. What is the demographic profile of the students according to their gender and age? 1.1 Gender 1.2 Age 2. What is the most prevalent parenting style used at the respondents’ homes? 3. What are the effects of parenting styles on the mental health of the respondents? 4. Is there a significant correlation between parenting styles and the mental health of the respondents? Significance of the Study The result of the study will be of great benefit to the following: To the Researchers. The results of the study shall contribute additional information to the existing knowledge on the effects of parenting styles on the mental health of their children. To the Guidance centers of the School. It shall provide relevant information that can be useful regarding the current mental health status of the students. To the Respondents. The study aims to provide a broader perspective on the parent-child relationship, which can benefit the child and parent. To the Students. The results of the study shall serve as a beneficial tool for students to be more conscious of their well-being, especially during the pandemic, and the factors that have a significant influence on their mental health. To the Future Researchers. This study adds to the knowledge base of the existing works of literature for future researchers who will be conducting a study with related variables. Assumptions The parenting style has a lot of impacts towards their children. It could affect the children’s perception either negatively or positively. We all know that these strategies from the parents will manifest into a child’s behavior and that it will cause some various changes. This will affect the child in a way that the overall well-being of a child can change into becoming a good person or a bad person. To summarize, the academic performance of the child will be affected due to the behavior and parenting style shown by their parents. This will let the researcher know how factors in the parenting style might affect a child’s behavior and to know what interventions can be made. Hypothesis There is no significant relationship between parenting styles and mental health of grade 12 students of De Ocampo Memorial College Amidst Pandemic Scope and Delimitations of the study This study will be limited to the effects of Parenting Styles on the Mental Health of Grade 12 Students of De Ocampo Memorial College. The participants that will be included in the study are Grade 12 students of De Ocampo Memorial College with no gender preferences and no specific age range who are enrolled in school year 2021-2022. The researcher will also include the parents of the participants in which they will determine the parenting style of these parents to see the correlation between parenting styles and the mental health of grade 12 students of De Ocampo Memorial College. The researcher will provide questionnaires through interview to be gathered and analyzed on the latter part of the study. Limitations of the study The study was done online in the designated household of the researchers were conducting personal or one on one interviews is not possible due to lockdown. Therefore interviews will be held via video call and questionnaires will be distributed to respondents through different social media platforms and can only be answered in the google form. Definition of Terms Parenting style - refers to the manner in which parents raise their children. This can refer to the parents' levels of expectations, performance demands, attentiveness to rules, etc. Mental health - refers to cognitive, behavioral, and emotional well-being. It is all about how people think, feel, and behave. Academic performance – the measurement of student achievement across various academic subjects. Pandemic - refers to an epidemic that has spread over several countries or continents, usually affecting a large number of people. Parenthood - the state of being a parent. Parent-child relationship - refers to the unique and significant affiliation between a parent and child.
