Lab II Notes: The Freely Falling Body - Week of 2008.09.22, Lab Reports of Physics

These lab notes detail the experiments and calculations conducted during lab ii, focusing on the concept of a freely falling body. Topics include the definition of average velocity and acceleration, the creation of a v vs. T plot, and a comparison of calculated values with official data. Additional discussions cover the effect of other forces, the constancy of g, and the impact of an initial downward push.

Lab II Notes Week of 2008.09.22 Lab II: The Freely Falling Body This lab asked for some simple data collection followed by a number of calculations. Here is what I was looking for. Quiz • Average velocity for an interval, equal to the velocity at the time midpoint of the interval, is ∆x/∆t. • Acceleration for an interval is ∆v/∆t. Analyses • From part A, a v vs. t plot. • From v vs. t and from two sections on the tape, the average value of a. • Comparison between your a and the official value of g. • Average v for the whole tape compared with instantaneous v at the time-midpoint. Best with an algebraic proof that they should be equal, but I didn’t take off points for that. • Based on a and v0, predictions compared with data for x(t) vs. t. Questions • Discussion of other forces affecting a. • Discussion of constancy and validity of a as a value for g. • Discussion of the effect an initial downward push would have (the correct answer is that there would be no effect on g). 1
