Background of the Study According to Webster’s Dictionary1828, friend defined as “one who is attached to another by affection; one who entertains for another sentiments of esteem, respect and affection, which lead him to desire his or her company, and to seek to promote his happiness and prosperity; opposed to foe or enemy.” Friend serves as our social support to have a matured and growing life. Youth today are under the evolution of smartphones that make an instant communication to everyone_._ It's a good help when it comes to advance knowledge because of the ready resources from the Internet. Aside from that fact, teenagers used it as an escape from reality. That's why a researcher says that teenagers nowadays are much exposed to mental health issues due to the increasing popularity of social media (Habito, 2019). Even though that's the case, there's still a numerous youth used social network as a guide by seeking advice. Psychologically speaking, adolescence is where curiosity started and a desire for dependency. They tend to be far away from their parents which caused a gap between children and parents. According to a research with 935 respondents, older teen boys (ages 15-17) are much more likely than any other group to say that they have friends in their network who they have never met in person. Nearly half of social network- using older teen boys (47%) have friends in their social network who they have never met. For older girls, only 28% report having people they have never met in

How does online friend help highschool student socially? C. Significance of the study This study is conducted to find how online friend help student emotionally and socially. This will encourage them to interact with people on the Internet as same as the benefits of other social media users. This study may also give benefits within teachers for being aware to their student’s behaviour regarding to the said topic. Also, this study may provide reasons to the parents to understand their children for having an online friend. Lastly, this study will be useful reference to the future researchers related to the study about having online friend. D. Scope and Delimitation This study aim to find how online friend help student emotionally and socially. It is delimited to Grade 11 students of Gordon College Senior High School Depattment, Columban College Senior High School Department and Kalalake Natonal High School, Olongapo City. Irregular Grade 11 students were not included in the study as a source data.
