Quote of Mary Shelley from Paradise Lost Leonardo Baschieri 4D 15/03/2017 Did I request thee, Maker, from my clay To mould me Man, did I solicit thee From darkness to promote me? With this quote, taken from Paradise Lost, Mary Shelley makes a comparison between the monster’s situation and Adam’s. In the story written by Mary Shelley the speaker is Frankenstein’s creature, who asks his creator, with a rhetorical question, if he has ever given him the order to live. So the monster wants Frankenstein to understand that having a creature involves also the responsabilitiy for his actions, even if that creauture makes a mistake, even if that creature is a killer. So this quote has an important educational teaching because educating a son means also giving him a part of ownself. So if this son makes something seriously wrong, the fault isn’t just of him but also of who has generated and educated him. This in my opinion wants also to make parents understand that a child isn’t simply an object, a toy, but a person and moreover a part of themeselves, of wich they have the responsability.
