VSMS practical

General Problem: On social adaptive behaviour. Specific Problem: To determine the level of social maturity of the subject by using Vineland Social Maturity Scale (VSMS). Basic Concept: Social Skills: A social skill is any competence facilitating interaction and communication with others where social rules and relations are created, communicated, and changed in verbal and nonverbal ways. The process of learning these skills is called socialisation. Adaptive Behaviour: Adaptive behaviour is behaviour that enables a person to cope in their environment with greatest success and least conflict with others. This is a term used in the areas of psychology and special education. It includes real-life skills such as grooming, getting dressed, avoiding danger, safe food handling, following school rules, managing money, cleaning, and making friends. Adaptive behaviour also includes the ability to work, practice social skills, and take personal responsibility. Social Maturity: Social Maturity is the process of developing appropriate attitudes for personal, interpersonal, and social adequacies of an individual, which are essential for functioning effectively in the Society. It includes such behavioural forms as group compatibility, kindness and sympathy, fair play emotional adjustability, courtesy and politeness, dependability, self-confidence, co-operation, leadership and cheerfulness. Relationship between social quotient(SQ)and intelligence quotient(IQ): Intelligence quotient(IQ) and social quotient(SQ) are comparable in predicting intelligence status. The latter is assessed whenever IQ testing is not possible. IQ and SQ were positively correlated (P = 0.01). Intelligence quotient(IQ): This is the measure of your comprehensive ability to solve math problems retain information and recall subject matters. Social quotient(SQ): This is the measure of your ability to build a network of friends and maintain it over a long period of time. Objective of the Study: To measure social maturation in eight social areas: Self-help General (SHG), Self-help Eating (SHE), Self- help Dressing (SHD), Self-direction (SD), Occupation (OCC), Communication (COM), Locomotion (LOM), and Socialisation (SOC). Preliminaries: Name : Harsh kumar Age : Gender: Male Educational qualifications: Class 2 Date of the study: 20th Sep 2021 Time of the study:6:00pm - 7:30pm Materials Required:

  1. Pencil

2.Data Sheet

  1. Eraser
  2. VSMS Questionnaire Procedure:
    1. First of all the conditions of the surrounding in which the test is to be taken will be checked. There will be no sort of noise or disturbance.
  3. The subject will made comfortable for taking the test.
  4. The material for the test will be arranged.
  5. Then the test is explained to caregiver of the child.
  6. Then there is a need to take verbal consent from the mother (if the child is too young) or the child.
  7. The subject is told about the confidentiality of the test.
  8. Related instructions are given to the subject.
  9. Data will be collected.
  10. Then the scoring and interpretation of the data will be done as soon as the subject complete the test. Instructions: The subject was asked to answer few questions about certain development milestones of her child for particular ages with honesty. Depending on whether or not her child accomplished these tasks at that particular age. Use Record Sheet for noting the child's responses. Mark the item pass (✓) if the child is able to perform correct and fail (×) if otherwise. Half credits may be given If it can be presumed that the child could have passed the item if the opportunity was present. These half credits receive full credit if they lie between two passed items. Description of the test: The Vineland Social Maturity scale is the psychometric assessment instrument designed to help in the assessment of social competence. It was developed by the American psychologist Edgar Arnold Doll. It measures the differential social capacities of an individual. Vineland Social Maturity Scale is used to access child. As this scale is best adapted for scientific study of social maturity of children. It provides an estimate of Social Age (SA) and Social Quotient (SQ), and shows high correlation (0.80) with intelligence. It is designed to measure social maturation in eight social areas:
  • Self—help general (SHG),
  • Self—help eating (SHE),
  • Self help dressing (SHD),
  • Self direction (SD),
  • Occupation (0CC),
  • Communication (COM),
  • Locomotion (LOM), and
  • Socialisation (SOC). The scale consists of 89 test items grouped into year levels. For details of the complete VSMS one should refer to VSMS manual. VSMS can be used for the age group of 0—15 years. The examiner should collect information on VSMS test items regarding child's abilities through direct observation and supplement it by interviewing the mother. Data Collection: The subject and his mother was asked to sit comfortably. Then the VSMS Record sheet was presented. Every questions were asked and the answers were marked. The passed scores were added up. Social age was calculated from Appendix II of VSMS manual. Social Quotient (SQ) was computed by dividing SA by CA and multiplying by 100. Assessed maturity levels both in terms of SA

and SQ for each of the eight social areas by referring VSMS norms and was entered in the columns of social maturity constellation record. The subject’s age-level maturity for each of the 8 domains was also determined with reference to the table to indicate if the child accomplished age- appropriate tasks. Data and Result: Chronological Age- 7y 5m (89months) 14×0.7= 9.8 13×0.7= 9. 7 ×1.2=8.4 5×2 =10 6 ×2 = 12 4 ×2.4=9.6 3×3= 3 ×2.4=7.2=75. Social Age- 75m 1d Social Quotient- SA/CA×100 =75.1 ×100 =84. Levels of IQ: 90 to 110: Average IQ 80 to 89: Below Average IQ 70 to 79: Borderline IQ A social quotient is a parallel concept to an IQ, wherein a score of 100 indicates average performance for age and scores less than 100 indicate below average functioning. Social intelligence is the capacity to know oneself and to know others. Social Intelligence develops from experience with people and learning from success and failures in social settings. Interpretation: As per the data collected and eventually scored, it can be concluded that the subject’s Social Quotient value is coming to be 84.38. This means that his social skills present are belonging to below average category. The subject requires stimulation and training by his caregivers so that the subject can perform his social skills at par with his age. The primary caregiver should provide the subject with simple instructions so that he can follow them and adapt to it in his daily chores. Domains Years Remarks SHG 8y Above Age Appropriate SHE 3y Below Age Appropriate SHD 9y Above Age Appropriate SD 6y Below Age Appropriate OCC 6y Below Age Appropriate COM 7y Age Appropriate LOC 5y Below Age Appropriate

SOC

8y Above Age Appropriate Conclusion: My subject have achieved age-appropriate social maturity in COM. In SHE, SD, OCC and LOC he got below age appropriate and in SHG, SHD & SOC he got above age appropriate. His SQ was 84.38 which is Below Average IQ. The subject needs self-help training to improve his eating, locomotion ability. Also he needs parent counselling to allow more room for learning and socialisation.
