Where to find information Level 1 Handbook The Level 1 Handbook contains information about your first year at University. A copy was posted to you. You can also find it on the SoMaS webpages under ’Current undergraduates’: http://www.shef.ac.uk/maths/current. Keep it with you this week in case you need it! Help in person If you need to speak to someone for help, try • the Student Services Information Desk (SSID) Level 3 of the Students’ Union; • the SoMaS office F floor of the Hicks Building; • your personal tutor (from Friday onwards). In Intro Week, there will also be extra help points around the campus and you can ask for help at any of the sessions this week. iSheffield app The iSheffield app (shef.ac.uk/cics/isheffield) has a helpful section on registration, including a timetable. 2 You can download it for a smartphone, or use it through the website on a computer. Note: not all of the sessions organised by the School of Mathematics and Statistics appear on the iSheffield registration timetable. Please pay attention today! 1 Events this week This week contains a number of important events which you must attend. Your life will be much harder if you miss them. Module Selection, today, here, soon! For: everybody. Why? To complete your choice of maths modules. Those who completed Online Module Selection during pre-registration... you have already completed this step! The others need their choice of mathematics modules to be signed-for on a module choice form. More details later. Welcome by the School of Languages and Culture, today, 3.30pm, Hicks F28 For: Maths with French, German, Spanish, Study in Europe only. Why? To sort out language arrangements for students on the above degree programmes. Note: This event is only for students on the degree programmes • Mathematics with French Language; • Mathematics with German Language; • Mathematics with Spanish Language; • Mathematics with Study in Europe. Those who want to take a language as an unrestricted module should attend the Unrestricted Module Event (next slide!). Unrestricted Module Enrolment, Tuesday, all day, Octagon Centre For: everybody, but see below. Why? If you want to choose modules in other subjects. 5 Language support classes, Weeks 1–4, Mon–Fri, 5–6pm, Hicks F30 For: international students. Why? To develop the language skills required to do well. These classes will happen every week-day, 5–6pm in Weeks 1–4 and are com- pulsory for international students. Even if you’re an international student with good English, you need these extra classes to cope with our modules! UK/EU students do not need to attend. 2 About our modules We offer the following maths modules to first-year students. • MAS110: Mathematics Core I (Semester 1) • MAS111: Mathematics Core II (Semester 2) • MAS112: Vectors and Mechanics (Year) • MAS113: Introduction to Probability and Statistics (Year) • MAS114: Numbers and Groups (Year) • MAS115: Mathematical Investigation Skills (Year) There is also a module run by the Faculty of Science, IPP101: Breaking Bound- aries, which is compulsory for all students. Through interdisciplinary debate, every Level 1 student has the opportunity to: • Engage with topical scientific research/ policy • Enhance critical thinking skills • Develop teamwork and communication skills • Develop as active learners The aims of ‘Breaking Boundaries’: Achieve More for L1 students in Science Key time points Choice • Each student picks a topic to debate (Sem 1, week 7) Teams • Each student is allocated to a small cross- departmental team (by start of Sem 2) Prepare • Teams research and prepare the debate topic; tutorials (Sem 2) Debate • Teams debate topic (Sem 2) 10 4 Module Selection We now move on to choosing modules. The rules vary by degree programme. We will sign now for any maths modules you choose. Non-maths modules must get a signature from the relevant department. If you change your mind about module choice after registration on Wednesday, you can ‘add/drop’ to change it until the end of Week 3. BSc or MMath in Mathematics You must take the 20-credit modules MAS110, MAS111, MAS112, MAS113 and MAS114. MAS115: Mathematical Investigation Skills is the final 20-credit option from maths. We recommend taking it but if you want to take an unrestricted module, this is the module that can be dropped. BSc or MMath in Mathematics and Statistics You must take the 20-credit modules MAS110, MAS111, MAS113, MAS114 and MAS115. MAS112: Vectors and Mechanics is the final 20-credit option from maths. We recommend taking it but if you want to take an unrestricted module, this is the only module that can be dropped. BSc Financial Mathematics You must take the 20-credit modules MAS110, MAS111, MAS113 and MAS114. You then take 40 credits from either Economics (ECN105 and ECN107) or Management (MGT132 and MGT141). These modules must be signed for by Economics or Management. MMath Mathematics with French/German/Spanish You must take the 20-credit modules MAS110, MAS111, MAS113 and MAS114 plus 40-credits of language modules. Your language modules will be signed for at the 3.30 event today. 11 MMath Mathematics with a Year Abroad You must take the 20-credit modules MAS110, MAS111, MAS112, MAS113 and MAS114. MAS115: Mathematical Investigation Skills is the final 20-credit option from maths. We recommend taking it but if you want to take an unrestricted module, this is the module that can be dropped. 5 Students with no forms If you completed the Online Module Selection in pre-registration, there is no yellow form for you, and you do not need signatures.
