Glaciers are as important in shaping economies today as they were at shaping
landscapes of yesterday
For our geography fieldtrip, we went to the Dachstein region in Austria to visit the dachstein glacier; we went also to schladming and hallstadt. At the dachstein glacier, we looked at how the glacier formed. The glaciers can be important for the economy as there are coming tourist but the tourist are mainly coming in winter for skiing. However, it is also true that glaciers destroy or damage the economy. Furthermore, you have to consider the other factors like the environment or the tourism. Therefore, can we be sure that Glaciers are as important as landscapes?
No, we cannot be sure that glaciers are as important as landscapes, because there are multiple reasons; firstly, we got the tourist that come to visit the glacier or to go skiing and if there are coming more tourists there should be space enough, in the valleys, to build houses to sell or rent the houses for people who are coming to visit the dachstein region. In addition, there are resources, especially stone and rock. The area would have a good energy resource, like a lake to gain hydraulic power from it. The people have to buy goods to have something to eat or drink. So the economy would get better. Therefore, we see that the tourism could have positive impacts on the economy, but the tourism has also some negative effects, for example on the Environment. The tourists leave rubbish in the region so that is a reason for the negative impact on the environment.
