Introduction

Lecture 1

Instrumentation and Control

• Dr. Javaid Khurshid

– Room C-211 (near PIEAS Conference Hall)

– Ph: 3234

– IAEA Nuclear Energy Series No. NP-T-3.12 “Core

Knowledge on Instrumentation and Control

Systems in Nuclear Power Plants”

For any Process System

• Controlled Input

– Measure parameters

– Analyze the parameters

• Controlled Output

– Measure parameters

– Analyze the parameters

• Example of Air Conditioner (AC)

– Check temperature and control the process of cooling

Question?

• Construct a Reactor, start it, electricity is

generated.

• Is there any way to “monitor” the actions of

the plant?

• Is there any way to “control” parameters

(output Power)?

Can you do this?

• Have a four wheel cart.

• Bring a can of Petrol and put it on cart.

• Burn the fuel on cart.

• Cart should start moving

• There should be no danger to passengers

• Fuel burning must be optimum.

Monitoring Nuclear Power Plants

• Main parameters of a Nuclear Power Plant

(NPP) for monitoring and control

– Temperature

– Pressure

– Flow

– Level

– Neutron flux

Instrumentation

• Instrumentation is used in all industrial processes

for consistent and reliable operations.

• It provides the means of monitoring, recording

and controlling a process to maintain in a desired

state.

• Since industrial systems are complex and manual

control is non-feasible and unreliable, automatic

control of such process is achieved with

instrumentation.
