CA5 Assessment

CA5 Adrenaline Junkies

1. Adrenaline Junkies Part 1 self-correcting exercises

Start CA5 with the exercises in Adrenaline Junkies Part 1 which you can find in Materials in the

classroom. They will help you widen your vocabulary, revise grammar areas and ou ll read and listen to ideas about the topic in the assessed task.

Do t forget to share different vocabulary items, expressions and grammar points that you have learnt in the I’ve lear t so ethi g today! folder in the Forum.

2. Group decisions

For Task 5.1 below, you are going to write a leaflet together with your group, promoting an activity

weekend. In order to function well, group work needs all members to keep in touch and contribute

regularly.

For this pre-task activity:

 Choose a spokesperson for your group in the Group Discussion area.

 Discuss where the activity weekend will be held and in which season (You can choose a real or an imaginary place, but specify if it is mountain/beach, etc. and spring, summer, etc.)

 Each member of the group must choose a different adventure activity or sport and let the group know in the Group Discussion area. NB: DO NOT all write about the same activity/sport.

 Your group will also need to write a title / brief introduction & final persuasive comment (see example of a leaflet below). Decide who will do those sections.

 One member of the group creates a new page (e.g. CA5 Leaflet) in your Group Wikispaces (not the ClassWiki).

Pre-task 5.1 25/4/17 – 27/4/17

CA5 Adrenaline Junkies

1.Write individual sections of Activity Weekend Leaflet

Your group is going to write a leaflet promoting an activity weekend. Make sure you have all done the

pre-task activities above (Pre-task 5.1).

Each member of the group must write a description of the adventure activity/sport

chosen (150-200 words each). Remember, you are trying to persuade people to try

this activity/sport so make your descriptions interesting and attractive! Put your

individual descriptions in the Group Wikispaces CA5 Leaflet page.

Your group also needs to add a title / brief introduction and conclusion and these should be added now.

Important: All work you submit for this course must be original. Do not copy-paste from the web or

other sources - your contribution must be written in your own words. Any material taken from

another source must be credited. For more information, see

http://cv.uoc.edu/~s_eao_0005_u01/plagiarism_IM.htm

2. Comments & Feedback

Read the descriptions of the adventure activities/sports in your Group Wikispaces (along with the

title/brief introduction and final persuasive statement) and add comments and feedback.

IMPORTANT: Your comments and feedback should focus on the overall STRUCTURE and CONTENT of

your groupmates' writing and the GRAMMAR and VOCABULARY. For example, you could consider these

questions when you read your groupmates' contributions:

 Is the sport or activity described in an exciting way?  Is there enough practical detail?  Are there any errors with, for example, verb agreement, spelling or sentence construction?  Is the title, brief introduction and final persuasive statement appropriate for a leaflet?

DO NOT ake ha ges to other stude ts ork. Some useful phrases for giving constructive peer feedback:

I liked the wa ou… (positive) Wh do 't ou… (suggestion) I suggest writi g/ ha gi g/e plai i g… (suggestion) Have ou thought a out i ludi g…(suggestion) It's not clear to e / I’ ot sure what ou ea … (request for explanation)

3. Edit & Post Leaflet

Read the comments and feedback that you receive from your groupmates and

then edit your part/s. When you have finished editing individually, the group

needs to put all the finished sections together with the title, brief introduction

and final persuasive statement.

This is how your finished group leaflet could be organised:

When your group is happy with your leaflet, the spokesperson can send the leaflet to the folder in the

Forum > CA5 Adrenaline Junkies.

NB: The mark for this part of CA5 will be the same for all group members that actively participate in

writing their individual section and editing the final version sent to the Forum

1. Respond to other group leaflets

Read as many of the other leaflets in the Forum as you can and reply to at least two of them. In your

reply, think about the following questions:

 Have you done any of the activities/sports described?  Has the leaflet persuaded you to go on this activity weekend to try any of the activities/sports?  Who would you go with and why?

Answer the questions as fully as you can, giving reasons for your answers.

2. Error correction exercise

Complete the Error Correction exercise your teacher posts to the classroom. The errors in this exercise

are common errors students often make at this level.

1. Adrenaline Junkies Part 2 self-correcting exercises

Complete the exercises in Adrenaline Junkies Part 2 in Materials in the classroom. They will help you

widen your vocabulary, revise grammar areas and ou ll read and listen to ideas about the topic in the assessed task.

Do t forget to share different vocabulary items, expressions and grammar points that you have learnt in the I’ve lear t so ethi g today! folder in the Forum.

2. Find a partner

You will do a real-time speaking activity with a member of your group using Tandem and Skype, as you

have already done in CA3. Write to your Group Discussion to find a partner to do the speaking activity

with and then:

 agree on a day and time to meet on Skype

 exchange Skype user names with him/her

Post-task 5.1 3/5/17 – 4/5/17

Pre-task 5.2 5/5/17 – 7/5/17

CA5 Adrenaline Junkies

Before doing TASK 5.2, make sure you have done the self-correcting exercises in Adrenaline Junkies

Part 2 > Communication Strategies and note the following general advice for pair work speaking tasks:

Advice for pair work speaking

 Practise recording a short Skype conversation to see if the recording quality is acceptable and you can locate the recording on your computer.

 Do t o er-prepare before you do your Tandem/Skype tasks.  Do t read fro a prepared s ript as our tea her ill assess ho ell ou a d our part er

speak together naturally.

 It is your responsibility to check the quality of the recordings sent to the classroom Forum and to repeat the activity if necessary.

 Both partners should record all the tasks in separate audio recordings with a Skype recorder. For information about Skype and Skype recorders, see Skype Information in the classroom.

 Say your names at the start of each recording to help identify the speaker.  Tandem only works when both students are connected. One student must "invite" the other

student to do the activity so first decide who will "invite". To invite your partner, find your

partner's name in dropdown menu 1, select the task "CA5 Adrenaline Junkies" in dropdown

menu 2 and click start. Your partner will receive the "invitation" and must click start. Tandem

will open in a new tab or window in your browser.

You can find more details of how to use Tandem by clicking here and here.

Meet your partner on Skype at the time you agreed and go to Tandem in the

classroom.

Make sure you read the instructions for each task (there are 3 in total). Task 1 is

for practice. Record each task separately and say your name at the beginning of

each one.

One of you must send the two separate audio recordings for Tasks 2 & 3 to the Forum >

CA5_Skype_Recordings. Remember to name the files (e.g. CA5_Task3_joanlopez_anamartinez.mp3).

In your message, tell your teacher which Task (2 or 3) you want them to assess.

TASK 5.2 Extreme Sports 8/5/17 – 15/5/17

CA5 Adrenaline Junkies

Write a message to the I’ve learnt something today! folder in the Forum with your thoughts on the following:

1. Reflect on pair work speaking

 Did you feel nervous before/during the pair work speaking?  How natural did your recording sound?  Do you think this pair work speaking was better than the previous one (in CA3)? Explain

why/why not?

 How could you improve?

2. Reflect on group work over the course

In CA2, you were asked to think about the advantages and disadvantages of working in small groups on

a page in the ClassWiki. Now you have finished the group work for the course, revisit the Groupwork

Debate page in the ClassWiki, read the comments and think about how you feel about group work now.

This Listening Comprehension exercise is worth 10% of the mark for CA5 and will close at 23:59 on the

15/5/17. You can go in and do the exercises as many times as you wish but the system will only count

your last attempt. To do this comprehension exercise, click on the link Listening 2 in your classroom.
