HOJA: 1 / 3.1. Read the fragment from The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin (1784) and his “Remarks Concerning the Savages
of North America” (1784). Read aloud Philip Freneau’s “A Warning to America” (1792). Look up the words you don’t know and try to explain any references and allusions in the texts.
3.2. Outline the most significant background information for the interpretation of the texts, such as historical location,
authorship (with some relevant information about the author) or addressees (if they can be identified or conjectured). 3.3. Analyze the following aspects in Franklin’s writings:
a) first-person narrator (reliability, sincerity, temporal or emotional distance from narrated events);
b) Puritanism and Enlightenment;
c) attitude towards religion;
d) perception of Indians a century after Mary Rowlandson.
3.4. In Freneau’s poem analyze aspects like title, genre, speaker, subject matter, themes, length, structure, setting,
