Nowadays the digitalisation of the global economy and the engagement of internet and online
platforms has brought many innovations and facilitations to everyday jobs and workers, but such
revolutions don’t come without drawbacks.
Some of the main advantages of the Fourth Industrial Revolution are linked to freelancing and self-
employed jobs. The digitalisation of such jobs has made it easier for the workers to locate potential
costumers, be easier to contact via designed platforms, work for foreign companies and receive
both poitive and negative feedbacks. Internet-based jobs have also given workers the possibility to
work anywhere and at any given time, making it easier to be indipendent and have healthier rithms
of life.
Despite the many advantages, there are also many drawbacks brought by the involvment of
internet and online platforms. As an instance, Artificial Intelligence has recently been brought up
and discussed due to malfunctions with Uber and its drivers. Drivers were being fired as a result of
the inefficence of AI and its facial recognition mechanisms. Computer systems such as the one
previously mentioned are in fact being used to have a better control over workers and their
productivity, but not only; people have in fact reason to suspect that the usage of gps and data is
not restricted to working hours and still in function long after; violating worker’s privacy.
To sum up everything that has been stated so far, I believe that these innovations regarding the
global economy have brought exponential changes in our lives, but said advantages should not be
helpful at the expenses of our privacy and safety.
