Wish
We say:
Wish [someone] luck
Wish [someone] all the best
Wish [someone] success
We say: Wish [someone] [something]
Not: I wish something happens, in this situation we use hope
I hope something happens
ex: I wish you all the best in future
ex: I saw Mark before the exam and he wished me luck
but:
ex: I’m sorry you’re not well. I hope you feel better soon
(not I wish you feel better)
Compare: I wish and I hope
I wish you a pleasant stay at the hotel
I hope you enjoy your stay at the hotel
Wish = we regret something
= something isn’t as we would like it to
When we use wish in this way we use the past, but the meaning is present!
ex: I wish I knew what to do about the problem.
= but I don’t know
ex: I wish you didn’t have to go so soon.
= but you have to go
