What is Ecommerce?
Ecommerce, also known as electronic commerce or internet
commerce, refers to the buying and selling of goods or services
using the Internet. Transaction of money, funds, and data are also
considered as E-commerce .
The history of e commerce begins in 1994: a man sold a CD by the
band Sting to his friend through his website NetMarket, an
American retail platform. (piattaforma di vendita al dettaglio) This is
the first example of a consumer purchasing a product from a
business through the World Wide Web—or “ecommerce” as we
commonly know it today.
Since then, ecommerce has evolved to make products easier to
discover and purchase through online retailers (Rivenditori
dettaglianti) and marketplaces. Independent freelancers (liberi
professionisti), small businesses, and large corporations have all
benefited from ecommerce, which enables them to sell their goods
and services at a scale that was not possible with traditional retail.
Online stores like Amazon, Flipkart, Shopify, Myntra, Ebay, Quikr,
Olx are examples of E-commerce websites (siti web).
E-commerce is one of the fastest growing industries in the global
economy. Electronic commerce can be classified into four main

1. Business to Business
Here the companies are doing business with each other. The
final consumer is not involved.
2. Business to Consumer
Here the company sells their goods and/or services directly to the
consumer. The consumer can browse (navigare) their websites and

Electronic commerce can be classified into four main categories.

1. Business to Business Here the companies are doing business with each other. The final consumer is not involved. 2. Business to Consumer Here the company sells their goods and/or services directly to the consumer. The consumer can browse (navigare) their websites and

look at products, pictures, read reviews. Then they place their order and the company ships (spedisce)the goods directly to them. Popular examples are Amazon, Flipkart, Jabong etc.

3. Consumer to Consumer Where the consumers are in direct contact with each other. No company is involved. Usually, goods traded are cars, bikes, electronics etc. 4. Consumer to Business It is a consumer to business. So the consumer provides a good or some service to the company. Say for example an IT (Information Technology) freelancer (libero professionista) who demos (dimostra) and sells his software to a company. Advantages of E-Commerce  E-commerce provides the sellers with a global reach (con una portata globale). They remove the barrier of place (geography). Now sellers and buyers can meet in the virtual world, without the obstacle of location.  Electronic commerce lowers the transaction cost. It eliminates many fixed costs of shops. This allows the companies to enjoy a much higher margin of profit.  It provides quick delivery of goods with very little effort on part of the customer. Customer complaints are also addressed quickly. It also saves time, energy and effort for both the consumers and the company.  Another great advantage is the convenience it offers. A customer can shop 24×7. The website is functional at all times, it does not have working hours like a shop.  Electronic commerce also allows the customer and the business to be in touch directly, without any intermediaries. Disadvantages of E-Commerce
