NINETEEN EIGHTY-FOUR (1984)

PLOT

Future world divided into 3 blocks : Oceania, Eurasia, Eastasia Oceania ruled by ‘ The Party’ , led by the ‘ Big Brother’ , continuously at war with other two States Control people’s life  Newspeak = invented language with limited number of words + threaten by Thought Police = free thought, sex and any expression of individuality are forbidden Winston Smith , protagonist, diary in which he writes thoughts and memories At “ Ministry of Truth ” (rewrites historical record to suit the Party), notice of a dark-haired girl, Julia , who also has a rebellious attitude  secret affair O’Brien , member of Inner party , in his luxury flat expresses his hate for the Party, against it in the Brotherhood , led by Goldstein  aim is overthrowing the Party He gives Smith the manifesto of Brotherhood, while reading it to Julia in his room soldier break in and arrest him  O’Brian is a spy , taken to Ministry of Love , tortured and brainwashed, still resists Room 101 = final destination, confront his worst fear : rats on his head Winston’s will is broken , released but he no longer loves Julia, given up his identity , learned love to Big Brother HISTORICAL BACKGROUND State of perpetual war , reminiscent of WWII Idea for 3 countries 1943 = Teheran Conference , meeting of Roosevelt , Stalin , Churchill to coordinate their military strategy against Germany and Japan Society  reflection of political atmosphere of tyrannies in Spain, Germany and Soviet Union = description of hunger, forced labour, mass imprisonment, perpetual monitoring Big Brother = Stalin and Hitler together, real and opposite leaders Orwell against any form of totalitarianism , either from left or right SETTING Oceania : large country including Americas, Atlantic Islands, Australia and southern Africa and Airstrip One (England) London in 1984  shortages, bomb sites = memory of every reader Political structure into three :

  • Inner Party : ruling class, less than 2%
  • Outer Party : educated workers, 18-19%
  • The Proles : proletariat, working class Orwell makes class divisions evident = existence of conflict and class struggle CHARCATERS Sense of loss, all finer emotions belong to the past… o Winston Smith : last man to believe in human values. Smith = commonest surname , Winston = Churchill’s nationalist appeal to “blood, toil, tears and sweat”. He’s 39 , physically weak. Desire for spiritual and moral integrity. Fears the moment of no memories of history. Loyal to her loved Julia until last torture o Julia : naïve and pessimistic , Party will neve be overthrown, in love with Winston= crime o O’Brien : member of Inner Party, tricking Winston to believe in the Brotherhood. Mysterious character, little background. Main agent of Winston’s torture.
