Jonathan swift (1667-1745) was a renowned irish satirist and writer, known for his biting wit and social commentary. Born to english parents in dublin, swift was encouraged by sir william temple to write his first satirical works, including 'the battle of books' and 'a tale of a tub'. He defended classical literature while mocking modern scholarship and criticized the religious parties of the day. Swift returned to dublin in 1694 and was ordained an anglican priest in 1713. He wrote pamphlets denouncing injustices in ireland, such as 'the drapier's letters', which attacked the government's proposal for a new coinage. Swift's most famous works include 'travels into several remote nations of the world' and 'gulliver's travels'. Controversial for his misanthropic attitude and conservative views, swift is considered one of the greatest english writers.
