TRADUZIONE 1.6.1.A

Every day's an endless stream Of cigarettes and magazines And each town looks the same to me The movies and the factories And every stranger's face I see Reminds me that I long to be Homeward bound I wish i was Homeward bound Home, where my thought's escaping Home, where my music's playing Home, where my love lies waiting Silently for me. Ogni giorno è un flusso infinito Di sigarette e riviste Ed ogni città sembra sempre la stessa per me I film e le fabbriche E la faccia di ogni sconosciuto che vedo Mi ricorda Tornare a casa Oh come vorrei Tornare a casa Casa dove fugge il mio pensiero Casa dove la mia musica suona Casa dove il mio amore rimane in silenzio Ad aspettarmi Homeward was translated this way because I used the procedure of paraphrasing. This process consists in the translation of a word using other terms. For example, the word that ends with ward/wards are paraphrased into words that indicate a particular directions or place. So I translated it into "tornare a casa".

TRADUZIONE 2.6.1 C

The Shrewsbury Quest Live the history and solve the mystery within this medieval attraction recreated on part of the original grounds of Shrewsbury Abbey. Explore Brother Cadfael's workshop as described in the books and his herb garden of 12th century plants. Discover more about Ellis Peters within her study. Solve the mysteries to win prizes, play medieval games, create your own illuminated manuscript and learn the art of calligraphy. The Shrewsbury Quest is a great day out for all the family. For translating “Shrewsbury Quest” I used the technique of culture-specific (which is a word that refer to a wide range of phenomena that are unique in to the culture of a language community. These phenomenas are as varied as artefacts, social customs, behaviours, values and traditions) in particular the Loan word. The Loan word is a word adopted from a foreign language with little or no modification.

Trust our blend of herbs and spices to get you out of a stew. Are your dishes tired, run down, depressed? ** Take heart. The chefs at Knorr have just the remedy. *** Eight different stock cubes created with one thing in mind. To enliven everyday meals, **** so helping you ring the changes. It's all down to herbs and spices. Which herbs and spices? That must remain a secret. As must the blend. Their effect on appetite, though, is common knowledge. Stufi del solito stufato? Knorr l'ha ravvivato! I vostri piatti sono stanchi, esauriti, depressi? Rincuoratevi. Gli chef di Knorr hanno per voi un mix di erbe e spezie che vi tirerà fuori dai pasticci. Otto dadi diversi creati con un solo intento. Rallegrare**** i piatti di ogni giorno aiutandovi così a trasformare la vostra cucina. Il segreto, che deve rimanere tale, sta tutto nelle erbe, le spezie e la ricetta. L'effetto sull'appetito, però, lo conoscono tutti. In this text I have identified different types of conceptual metaphor. Firstly, a metaphor is a rhetorical figure that is useful in order to describe something in terms of something else, so basically with the metaphor we say that something is something else and there are two instruments that we use: the topic, which is the thing we’re describing, and the vehicle is the source domains from which we take the information in order to describe the topic. your dishes tired, run down, depressed?: in this case we are in front of a personification so the adjectives that are used to describe a person in this case are useful to describe something that is inanimate (the dishes). The dishes are associated to someone who have some health problem and the Knor is the remedy, the medicine. In Italian I have translated it in a literal way “stanchi, esauriti, depressi” and, also in Italian, we can achieve the same personification. The translation technique adopted is the one in which the metaphor is converted in the same metaphor because we can achieve the same meaning as the original text.

TRADUZIONE 4.6.

It's a funny thing about mothers and fathers even when their own child is the most disgusting little blister you could ever imagine; they still think that he or she is wonderful. Some parents go further: They become so blinded by adoration they manage to convince themselves their child has qualities of genius. Well, there is nothing very wrong with all this, it's the way of the world. It is only when the parents begin telling us about the brilliance of their own revolting offspring, that we start shouting, "Bring us a basin! We're going to be sick!" School teachers suffer a good deal from having to listen to this sort of twaddle from proud parents, but they usually get their own back when the time comes to write the end-of-term reports. If I were a teacher, I would cook up some real scorchers for the children of doting parents. "Your son Maximilian", I would write, "is a total wash-out. I hope you have a family business you can push him into when he leaves school because he sure as heck won't get a job anywhere else". The three idioms that I individuated are the one of "similar meaning and form" (it's funny...of the word) in which consist of finding an idiomatic expression in the target language (TL) that has both the same meaning and a similar form to that in the source language (SL). In other words, the translated idiom is very similar to the original in both content and structure; and then the "idom of similar meaning but different form" in which consist in the use of an idiomatic expression in the target language (TL) that has the same meaning as the idiom in the source language (SL), but differs in form. The idea is to retain the meaning of the original idiom even if the wording is different.

by using the definite articles, the Italian language wants to take some kinds of distances from the reader and so, taking this distance, the results is that the text with a higher degree of formality.

It is premodified by three nouns: “support”, “products” and “desktop”. I have translated it with the noun phrase “avviso di assistenza tecnica per i prodotti desktop” whose head noun is “avviso”, that is postmodified by two prepositional phrases “di assistenza tecnica” and “per i prodotti desktop”. The first one is made up of the preposition “di” and the object of the preposition that is a NP, whose head noun “assistenza” is postmodified by the adjective “tecnica”. The second one is made up of the preposition “per” and the object of the preposition that is a NP, whose head noun “prodotti” is premodified by the determiner “i” and postmodified by the noun “desktop”. Therefore, the translation procedure I have adopted is reordering because the Italian language doesn’t allow premodification in the same way as English.

TRADUZIONE 8.5.

Like most people I lived for a long time with my mother and father. My father liked to watch the wrestling, my mother liked to wrestle; it didn't matter what. She was in the white corner and that was that. She hung out the largest sheet on the windiest days. She wanted the mormons to knock on the door. At election time in a Labour mill town she put a picture of the Conservative candidate in the window. She had never heard of mixed feelings. There were friends and there were enemies. C’erano amici e c’erano nemici. There are 11 examples of past simple in this text and these are … Most of these examples have been translated in Italian with the imperfetto, because they indicate habits in the past, except for the first example that has been translated with the passato remoto, because it refers to an action distant in the past.

TRADUZIONE 9.6.

Over the last twenty years, in the so-called industrialized countries, consumer society in general and the catering business in particular have changed considerably as a result of improved economic conditions that have transformed our lifestyles and consumer needs. These in turn have inevitably had an impact on our eating habits. Hence, food offers a valid interpretation of current changes in society.

One example of PP is “in the so-called industrialized countries” where the preposition “in” is followed by the object of the preposition, that is a NP with premodification. The head noun “countries” is premodified by the adjectives “industrialized” and “so-called” and by the determiner “the”. In Italian, the preposition “in” plus the determiner “i" is followed by the object of the preposition, that is a NP with premodification and postmodification. The head noun “paesi” is premodified by the adjective “cosiddetti” and postmodified by the adjective “industrializzati. Therefore, in order to achieve accuracy and fluency, I have adopted transposition at the level of the phrase: the English NP with premodification has been translated in Italian with a NP with premodification and postmodification.

WORKBOOK

ACTIVITY 4.4 Translate into English the texts reproduced in exercise 4.3 above and explain the procedures adopted to deal with wordplay.

  1. Effetto Puglia: Guida cineturistica a una regione tutta da girare. Apulian Effect: A tour guide to movie locations around Puglia. PUN NON-PUN: The pun has been lost but the verb “movie” sounds almost live “move” so it could represent a play of letters of course.
  2. Affida i tuoi investimenti a chi ti sa guidare. (to drive and to guide) Entrust your investments to those who can guide you. PUN NON-PUN: There is no correspondence of puns but there is the possibility of rendering exactly the same meaning.
  3. La protezione che ti assicura il sorriso. (to guarantee and to insure) The protection/cover that insures your smile. PUN NON-PUN Protect your smile. PUN ZERO ACTIVITY 5.5 Translating metaphor in poetry Translate the poem “Tutti i colori” in English. Your aim is to achieve lexical and grammatical accuracy as well as stylistic fluency. Also, reflect on the procedures adopted to relay the creative metaphors examined in exercise 5.4 above. ALL THE COLOURS All the colours of the world meet on the branches and in the meadows but the wind whips and disperses them the cold freezes and drowns them the gloomy sky wraps them in darkness the jealous sky can’t house all the colours. Tutti i colori del mondo si danno invito sui rami e nei prati ma il vento lì frusta e disperde il freddo lì ghiaccia e lì nega chiuso li avvolge di buio il cielo geloso e incapace di tanti colori The conceptual metaphors related to the poem are: THE COLOURS ARE FRIENDLY PEOPLE (FROM DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE WOLRD); THE WIND, THE COLD AND THE SKY ARE UNFRIENDLY PEOPLE WHO DO NOT WANT COLOURS. To achieve the fluency, accuracy and comprehensibility from the Italian poem, first, I decided to translate “si danno un invito” with the verb “to meet” because it gives the idea of social aspect of friendly people who want to enter in contact with others. The verb “negare” has been rendered with “drown” in order to give the parallelism with migrants, who cross the sea in search of a better life, but sometimes they cannot complete their journey and they die. The adjective “gloomy” is useful to render the concept of someone who is hostile to the positivity of a person. Gloomy, to translate “chiuso”, means a dark sky in opposition with the joy of the colours, but it can also be interpreted as the characteristic of a pessimistic person. In addition, in the end, to render again the idea of the migrants in search of a new home, I used the verb “to house” to paraphrase the adjective incapable.

ACTIVITY 5.7 Translate into English the headlines of the promotional leaflets reproduced in exercise 5.4 above and explain the proc edures adopted to relay the source texts’ idioms in the target language. Da oggi investire online è alla portata di tutti. From today, investing online is within everyone’s reach. (English idiom with a similar meaning and a different form) 2. È il momento di tirare fuori quel sogno dal cassetto. It’s time to make your dream come true. (English idiom of similar meaning but different form) ACTIVITY 9.4 Translate the poem “Trionfo d’estate” in English. Your aim is to achieve lexical and grammatical accuracy as well as stylistic fluency. Also, reflect on the procedures adopted to re nder the adjective phrases identified in exercise 9.3 above. TRIUMPH OF SUMMER Huge (Has been chosen because it collocates better than exaggerated with fields-SUBSTITUTION) Fields of wheat And gaudy (sgargianti: it collocates with flowers and colours- EQUATION) Purple (paonazzi: reordering from italian- EQUA) Flowers Scorched (has been added to amplify the meaning and to achieve comprehensibility-AMPLIF) By the heat And the sun Cover The valleys And hills With rich (EQUA) Golden (reordering, before the noun) Velvet Fragrant (reordering, before the noun) Loaves of bread Triumph of summer. The strategies used, according to the studies of Joseph Malone; are: AMPLIFICATION, SUBSTITUTION, EQUATION, REORDERING ACTIVITY 10.2 Translate into English the headlines analysed in exercise 10.1 above. Examine the semantic and syntactic transpositions adopted to create a grammatically accurate and effective target text.

1. Un giorno tutto questo sarà ancora tuo. One day all this will still be yours. One day: pronoun phrase, adverbial function All this: pronoun phrase, subject function Will be: verbal phrase (with a modal verb), verb function Still: adverbial phrase, adverbial function strategy of reordering to provide grammatical accuracy Yours: pronoun phrase, complement function A+S+MODAL V+A+PRIMARY V+C 2. Pensare a te stesso è un gesto d’amore. Taking care of yourself is caring about your loved ones. Taking care of yourself: non-finite verb phrase, subject Is: primary verb, verb Caring about your loved ones: non-finite verb phrase, subject complement
