Summary of the plot The play opens with the death of the great king of Denmark Hamlet the old and the celebration of his funeral. It is said that while he was asleep in the garden, taking a nap, a serpent bit him killing him. Anyways his son doesn’t accept this explanation, is not totally convinced, he feels that there’s something wrong with it. Meanwhile Claudius became the new king of Denmark and after only two months he marries not only the queen but also his dead brother’s wife and sister in law, Gertrude. At the time this was seen as incest. Whereupon, Hamlet the young starts feeling even more disappointed: his mother, who he taught was in love with father, now sleeps in the same bed as the new king, who is totally the opposite, in a negative way, of Hamlet the old. He can’t accept it especially since usually the mourning was respected for years and not only months. One night, during the night patrol, three soldieries including Horatio, Hamlet’s closest friend, saw a ghost which was identical to the dead king. They had the impression that he wanted to tell something to his son, hence the day after Hamlet the young goes there and meets the him. Even if the soldieries told him not to follow the ghost, Hamlet decides to do so in order to know the truth. The king tell him that it is true that was a snake that killed him, but a snake in his family: Claudius. While sleeping on the bench, Claudius put in his ears the poison. The brutal part was that by doing so he left him die without the last rite (estrema unzione), thus when you kill someone like this he is condemned to wander in vain without reaching paradise. The ghost tells to his alive son that if he really loves him, he has to vendicate his memory and the fact that his wife, his kingdom and his life were stolen, by killing Claudius. And Hamlet promises he would. When the morning light is coming, the ghost leave him and he makes Hamlet promise not to tell anyone anything.
(Set in the middle ages, they kill without problems) Anyways Hamlet wants to know and be sure that Claudius really killed his father before get revenge. He makes a first stratagem: pretend to be mad , but it came out being not very fruitful. One day a company of actors comes at the Castle of Elsinor and Hamlet has a new idea for the second stratagem: a theatrical production based on the true alleged dinamics/developments of the murder, which Hamlet, after he asked to the group if they had a tragedy in their repertoire, proposed as a different ending. The play chosen was “La morte di Gonzalo” and he asks them to represent the death like his father told him. During the representation Hamlet takes sit in front of Claudius in order to see perfectly his genuine reaction. When the dead scene takes place, Claudius stands up and goes into the Chapel, followed by Hamlet who sees him praying and seems to be regretting. He can’t kill him because God will forgive him, he has to kill him when he is a seeker so he will go to hell, like he reserves. Claudius understand that Hamlet knows and assumes he wants to do something about it and he is dangerous for him, so he wants to send him to England in order to kill him. Claudius wants to send him to his friend King of England so he writes a letter to hi, in which he tells him to condemn him to death straight to his arrival. However, during the night Hamlet, who assumed there was a plot, finds the letter in the pocket of a soldier and he replaces it with another written by him, in which he, pretending to be Claudius, says to kill the two soldiers being two traitors. But meanwhile Hamlet has made another disaster, he killed Polonius by chance, the father of his lover Ophelia who was a member of the court and was in charged of controlling him on behalf of Claudius. Even though Hamlet loves Ophelia he can’t tell her what is going on because she being a really good person, will say everything. After the death of her father she gets really mad to the point of death: she climbed a tree and fell into the river, it seemed a form of suicide. Leartes, Ophelia’s brother and Polonius’ son, at the moment wasn’t in Denmark and when he turns back he find out that both his father and sister are dead because of Hamlet. Therefore he is furious with him. Returning from England, Hamlet sees from afar, approaching ever sharper, what appears to him as a funeral. Getting closer he meets an undertaker (this is the only time he’ll hold a skull [skull], with which Shakespeare is always depicted). In this occasion he express his opinion about women, beautiful one, who use their own beauty to persuade and manipulate men. When he recognizes Ophelia he also meets his brother Laertes and starts quarreling with him. Claudius, who can’t explain how Hamlet might have come back, immediately intended to kill him. Wanting to use Laertes' anger on his behalf, he decides to make a deal with him, and the two ally. They decide to make a plot, while in reality is Claudius the one who organizes everything and sets it during a fencing match (scherma): the plan would be to kill Hamlet by poisoning him through a poisoned pearl placed in his glass once he wins a duel. The blade of Laertes sword is poisoned, because stowed in a poisoned sheath, and whoever is the one who strike first, wins a pearl to put in his wine, obviously without knowing that is poisoned. The two invite Hamlet to take part of the game and play a match. As expected he wins and put the pearl in the wine, but he doesn’t drink and Claudius decides to not insist to not look suspicious. The deals go on. As Hamlet is tying his shoe, Laertes strikes him and wounds with his sword. At this point, an exchange of arms takes place, after which Hamlet injures Laertes: both of whom are injured. Laertes then confesses everything and explains that they are both on the verge of dying because they are poisoned. Gertrude, who didn’t know anything about the plot, because thirsty drinks from Hamlet’s glass and dies. Before he dies, Hamlet makes Claudius drink the poison. So both Claudius and Laertes die. The last one who dies is Hamlet, who dies in Horatio’s arms and asks him to tell the true story and to entrust to Fontine Brus all the power as a descendant. Summary
