Charle s Dickens
He represent the social criticism (critica sociale), he wanted to
denounce the evil of his society, with a final didactic aim (finali
educati va).
During Victorian age there were a lot of problem:
- exploitation of children
- bad hygienic condition
- overpopulation in the cities
- sub populations in the country side
He deal mostly with child exploitation, he begun to write sketches
humorous and collected them in a collection. He used humor and satire,
his final aim was to be didactic, he wanted to teach something to his
time society, because according to him they weren't aware of their
condition and the problem, because everything according to the state
was perfect, he wanted to show the reality.
Plots
All the same, he follow a plan: they sound a bit artificial, sentimental
and episodic. London was the se tting of the most of his novels and he
describe it in re alistic details, because he describes London
underground, so the rough area.
Character
He created a type of character that is a stereo type, that can be
adapted for dif ferent children in his stories. Children are the most
important characters in Dickens’s novels and making them demoralized
teachers instead of the taught, because they are the models of the
way people ought to behave to one another.
They are from middle lower class and lower classes.
- He used a lot of style full of adjectives, repetitions of words and the
structures, hyperbolic and ironic remarks

Oliver Twist Published in 1837 The novel fictionalizes they economic insecurity and humilation Deackens experienced when he was a boy. The setting is London Underground (as in all his story). There are three different social levels:

  • Parochial world of the wordhouse
  • The criminal world with pickpockets and murderers, so poverty drives them to crime
  • Word of the Victorian middle class with respectable people who show a regard for moral values He denounce what happens inside the work houses. The terrible conditions in the work houses were meant to inspire the poor to improve their condictions. Instead of alleviating the suffering of the poor, the officials who run the workhouses abused their rights as individuals.
