In the English literature George Orwell criticizes the totalitarianism and
the violation of liberty he talks about of this in his novel “1984”.
Orwell, born Eric Blair in 1903, was the son of a minor colonial official.
He was educated at first in St. Cyprian’s school and then at Eton; there he
began to develop an independent-minded and professed atheism and
socialism. He was also an Indian Imperial Policeman but he went on leave
because he wished to escape from every form of man’s domination over
man (The Road to Wigan Pier). He was a journalist and when he come
back in London he started a social experiment: he spent a short period of
his life between poor. In Paris he decided to work as dishwasher in a hotel
and he started to publish his works with the pseudonym of George Orwell.
He chose “George” because it had an Englishness about it, and “Orwell”
because it was the name of a river he was fond of.
In 1936 Orwell went to Catalonia with his wife to report on the Spanish
Civil War. In Barcelona he fought in the trenches. During the Second

In the English literature George Orwell criticizes the totalitarianism and the violation of liberty he talks about of this in his novel “ 1984 ”.

Orwell, born Eric Blair in 1903, was the son of a minor colonial official. He was educated at first in St. Cyprian’s school and then at Eton; there he began to develop an independent-minded and professed atheism and socialism. He was also an Indian Imperial Policeman but he went on leave because he wished to escape from every form of man’s domination over man ( The Road to Wigan Pier). He was a journalist and when he come back in London he started a social experiment: he spent a short period of his life between poor. In Paris he decided to work as dishwasher in a hotel and he started to publish his works with the pseudonym of George Orwell. He chose “George” because it had an Englishness about it, and “Orwell” because it was the name of a river he was fond of.

In 1936 Orwell went to Catalonia with his wife to report on the Spanish Civil War. In Barcelona he fought in the trenches. During the Second World War he joined to the BBC.

Orwell’s last book “ Nineteen Eighty-Four” was his most original novel, it was published in 1949.

1984 ”describes a future world divided into three blocks: Oceania , an empire which England called “Airstrip One”; Eurasia [ iurescia ], including Russia and Europe; Estasia [ istescia ], including Asia and the Far East. The regimented in Oceania [ osiania ], is oppressive and ruled by the Party , which is led by a figure called Big Brother and is continuously at war with the other states. To control people’s lives, the Party uses the Newspeak , an invented language with a limited number of words and threatening them trough the Thought Police. Free thoughts, sex and any expressions of individuality are forbidden but the protagonist, Winston Smith , illegally buys a diary where he writes all his thoughts and memories to the future generations. Smith begin a secret affair with Julia but a member of the Inner Party, O’ Brien , tells them that he hates the Party too and works against it as a member of “ Brotherhood ”, a mysterious group that is trying

to overthrow the Party. Winston and Julia are arrested because O’Brien is a Party spy and tortures Winston that struggles to resist but at the end of the novel he has given up his identity and has learned to love Big Brother.

1984 ” is an anti-utopian novel that shows possible future societies that are anything but ideal and that satirize existing conditions of society. The Party has the absolute control of the press, communication and propaganda; language, history and thought are controlled in the interests of the State through the introduction of Newspeak, the official language that people consider impossible to express their own ideas. The impression of the novel is a sense of loss , a feeling that beauty and truth, emotions and values belong to past. The Big Brother controls every aspects of life, he embodies the dictator ; Winston Smith is the last man believing in human values in a totalitarian age. Memory and trust are positive themes for Winston to maintain his individuality. Orwell believed that “if a man has trust he cannot to be destroyed”.

Orwell’s life and works were marked by the unresolved conflict between his middle class education and his emotional identification with the working class. Orwell wanted to reveal facts and that lead him to believe that writing has a useful social function even if he believed that writers should be independent. He was a critic, politic journalist in the traditions of Swift and Defoe. He was also influenced by Dickens in the social themes and use of realistic and factual language; he insisted on tolerance and justice.
