Irregular Verbs - Patterns

Match each verb in the top line with one verb in the bottom line. The two verbs should be similar in terms of how they form the irregular past simple.

Key :

Begin – drink (begin began begun, drink drank drunk)

LIE VS. LAY

Look at these irregular forms:

LAY LAID LIE LIED LAIN

 Which form is the past tense of lie (= saying something that is not true, mentire )?  Which form is the past participle of lay (= to put something in a horizontal position, distendere qualcosa, disporre in un certo modo )?  Which form is the past participle of lie (= resting in a horizontal position, essere sdraiato )?

Key :

 Which form is the past tense of lie (= saying something that is not true)? LIED  Which form is the past participle of lay (= to put something in a horizontal position)? LAID  Which form is the past participle of lie (= resting in a horizontal position)? LAIN

  1. Lay = vt , place sth horizontally, to arrange sth (laying). ITA stendere, distendere qualcosa. lay laid laid (laying). They laid a carpet on the floor.

  2. Lie = say sth that is not true. ITA mentire. lie lied lied (lying). She lied to me and now I don’t trust her anymore.

  3. Lie = vi , to be in a horizontal position. ITA giacere, essere sdraiato. lie lay lain (lying). The cat was lying by the fire.
