James Joyce was an Irish modernist writer who wrote in a groundbreaking style that was known both for its complexity and explicit content. He was a novelist, poet, short story writer, teacher and literary critic. He published “Portrait of the artist as a Young man” in 1916, but his masterpiece is “Ulysses” from 1922: coming from the latinised name of Odysseus, the hero of Homer's epic poem the Odyssey, the novel establishes a series of parallels with the poem, with structural correspondences between the characters and experiences of Leopold Bloom/Odysseus, Molly Bloom/ Penelope, and Stephen Dedalus/Telemachus, in addition to events and themes of the early 20th-century context of modernism, Dublin, and Ireland's relationship to Britain. Thanks to his masterpiece, Joyce perfected his stream-of-consciousness style and became a literary celebrity. The explicit content of his prose brought about a landmark legal decision on obscenity. Other well-known works are the short story collection Dubliners (1914) and Finnegans Wake (1939). His other writings include three books of poetry, a play, his published letters and occasional journalism. This author was born on February 2, 1882, in Dublin and died in 1941.. He contributed to the modernist avant-garde and The main features that were appreciated are: the stream-of-consciousness and the examination of big events through small happenings in everyday lives. The writer came from a big family. He was the eldest of ten children born to John Stanislaus Joyce and his wife Mary Murray Joyce. His father, while a talented singer (he reportedly had one of the finest tenor voices in all of Ireland), didn’t provide a stable household. He liked to drink and his lack of attention to the family finances meant the Joyces never had much money. From an early age, Joyce showed not only an exceeding intelligence but also a gift for writing and passion for literature. He taught himself Norwegian so he could read Henrik Ibsen’s play in the language they’d been written and spent his free time devouring Dante, Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas. Because of his intelligence, Joyce’s family pushed him to get an education. Largely educated by Jesuits, Joyce attended the Irish School of Clongowes Wood College and later Belvedere College before finally landing at University College Dublin, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a focus on modern languages.
