Word order choices Four elements influence word order: information flow, emphasis, contrast, weight Information flow. Usually, given information is at the beginning, while new info is at the end. This also contributes cohesion to the text. Focus and emphasis: focus gives prominence to a part of the sentence. Brilliant that was! Contrast: the focus part is highlighted to show its difference with another part. It’s not the bikers, it’s the other vehicle that’s on the road. Weight long and complex elements are placed at the end of the sentence.
A. Fronting and inversion. fronting
Inversion the verb phrase comes before the subject.
Subject verb inversion Initial adverbials usually have a cohesive function. In conversation it is used for time- place description
B. Existential there It is used to state the existence of something. The noun phrase after to be is called notional subject
The verb in existential there clauses Not only the verb to be is used with the existential there, but also other existential verbs
The notional subject is the np that functions as the subj of the clause
Simple vs complex existential clauses Focus on a new topic is used at the beginning of a sentence to introduce new elements. For this reason, it is used for fairytails, it is also reinforced with the use of a demonstrative pronoun
C. Other word order topics Dislocation. It separates a clause- like structure into two chunks there are two types of dislocation.
