  • precious knowldge presented as reliable, credible, logical, consistent

Negative evaluation

v counterfactive strategies: directly assertive of the worth of previous knowledge/claim; openly expresses the writer's rejection of reported claims which are represented as being incorrected, wrong, bad

  • previous knowledge presented as bad, wrong v non factive: non assertive attitude towards reported claims stressing their unreliability
  • expressing non alignment
  • precious knowldge presented as unreliable due to conceptual fallacies, lack of coherence..

Neutral evaluation

you are not directly making judgement to the contento of the quotation but you are referring to the form, manner as a given text is presented v stylistic strategies: nonassertive; reporting somebody's position toward claims in terms of clarity or intelligibility; the comment is about the manner --gina clearly/quite confusing explained v tentative strategies: non assertive attitude; reporting somebody's position toward claims in terms of possibility

  • gina does not seem to consider, gina suggests that x is likely to be..

Interactional strategies

and

to involve and engage them in the text

INTERACTIONAL RESOURCES

Those aspects create the authorial ethos, the author's textual persona or self image

Personalization

depend on the use of first and second person v writer oriented/ first person strategies: (Dangerous when making judgements, evaluative comments)

  • throug a personal subjective perspective (i, me, my, mine) for opinion but not to evaluate
  • through a personal pronoun (we) inclusive (we as authoritie's group), inclusive (we as community, sharedness) v reader in the text/secon person strategies: estabilishing common ground with the reader
  • second person pronouns (you will see)
  • imperatives (see, imagine)
  • questions (are we really sure about..?)

Modalization

markers of epistemic modality,to balance objective information and subjective interpretation v confidence/certainty markers: will, cannot, must; they presuppose adresse's positive face, his role is passive content as absolute v caution/possibility (anticipating or possibly neutralizing possible criticism) markers: can, may, might, possible, be likely.. they presuppose adresse's negative face, his role is active content as negotiable
