Part 1: Collocations
1. Do your homework
I would show a picture of a student in the library trying to do his homework and I would ask the
student “ what do you think he’s doing? And then I would explain to them that we use the verb
“do” with tasks like homework,housework…
2. Have a bath
I would show them a picture of a bathtub and a shower, and I would ask them “what do you do
when you feel dirty ?” I would explain to them that we use the verb “ have” with daily routines, so
after that I would ask them to write and describe their daily routine.
3. Break a record
Example: yesterday John ran for 10 miles, he broke the record.
I would write this example on the board and I would ask the students to explain to me why we
use the verb “break” and I would ask if anyone has ever broken the record in anything, I would
listen some answers and try to understand if they understand the mean of the collocation and
how to use it.
4. Take an exam
I would write on the board some examples like: “Tomorrow all the students will have to take an
exam. I would tell them that we use the verb “ take” when we need to “take” an exam or test.
5. Catch the bus
I would show them a picture of a school bus, train, plane and I would ask them to create an
example for each picture using the verb “catch”, I would explain that the verb “ catch” is used
with public transport.
6. Pay attention
I would explain them that even if “pay” means “give money for buying something” in this context
it means “focus on something or someone” and that we use the verb “pay” with abstract nouns
like respect
7. Save energy
I would ask the students “why do we turn off the light when we leave a room?” and after I would
explain to them that we use the verb “save” also with time and money, and I would ask them to
write 2 more examples.
8. Keep a promise
I would write “ he broke his promise, I don’t trust him anymore” and after explaining the meaning
I would ask them to try to think what could be the opposite meaning and which collocations they
are going to use.
9. Get married

Part 2: Eliciting

  • SMOOTH: I would use the “realia” technique: I would bring two objects, one rough and one smooth, and let the students touch them, asking them to describe what they feel by touch.
  • TO GO ON A DATE:I would show a photo of two people sitting at a restaurant table with a candle and a bouquet of roses. I would ask the students to describe what they see in the picture and then I would explain the expression “to go on a date.”
  • HARMFUL : I would show the students a photo of a cigarette, and right after, a photo of the same cigarette but crossed out with an X. I would ask the students why there’s an X drawn over it. After listening to their answers, I would ask them to list other things that are harmful.
  • SILVERWARE:I would bring a spoon, a fork, and a knife. I would ask the students to name each utensil and say what material they are made of, and then I would ask them to tell me “how are they called all together ?”
  • TO DANCE: I would show a video of students dancing at prom and ask: What do you see in the video? What do you think they are doing?
