  1. If you don’t know where to find language usage like collocations, verb patterns etc. go to https://skell.sketchengine.co.uk/run.cgi/skell Although a good monolingual dictionary will help you with the meanings of words you also need to know how to use them with other words:
  2. Type in the word “succeed” (Use small case letters because the programme is case sensitive. Click on the “word sketch tab”: which preposition is commonly used with succeed?
  3. Click on the preposition to see examples of this. Which verb pattern can you see following this?
  4. Type in “advised” and click on the “examples” tab. Which verb pattern do you notice following this verb?
  5. Type in “well-informed” and look at the “word sketch tab” can this only be used to refer to people or is it commonly used with something else as well?
  6. Now explore this yourself: choose three words or expressions that you are not sure how to use and look them up in SkeLL.
  7. Now share your findings with a partner

  1. Certain bound morphemes (usually in the form of suffixes) such as the “s” and “c” in advise represent word class changes as do the suffixes: tion, able, ity, ary, y, ful (the ‘ed’ is a bound morpheme but it expresses the simple past inflection even though here this chages word class and becomes an adjective.)   2. You need to know the basic meaning and morphology but also how to use words: are the nouns countable or uncountable? Is the spelling the same as the verb form etc.? What are the correct prefixes for the negative adjectives? Which verb patterns go with them? What common collocations go with them
