THE NARRATIVE TENSES
Past simple
oDescribes the main events of the story
oDescribes sequences of events (that day we got up before sunrise, had
breakfast to the sound of lions roaring in the distance, packed our gear into
the jeep and set off, excited about what the day ahead might bring us)
oIt is the 'standard' narrative tense. If in doubt, go for past simple.
Past continuous
oDescribes unfinished actions, especially around a certain time
oDescribes longer actions interrupted by shorter ones
oIs often used for giving background to a story
oIs sometimes used to make the actions in a story seem more immediate,
especially with the word,
now
Past perfect
oDescribes actions which took place before the main actions in the story
oServes to give chronological order to a story (when we got back to the
camp site that evening we found out that a bad storm had lifted our tent and
blown it into the sea, with all our stuff in it)
Past perfect continuous
oDescribes longer continuous actions which took place before the main
actions in the story
oAnswers the question ‘how long’ (what is the difference between ‘how
long did you live in Paris?’ and ‘How long had you been living in Paris when
you met Claude?’ ?)
oIs sometimes used to explain the condition of people or things at the time
of the main events in the story.
How well do you know how to use the narrative tenses?

I went on a trip last month to Dubai with my friend John. I was very excited about going because I _______________________(never, visit) Dubai before, and I _____________________(not, see) John for a long time, because he lives in Australia. Like myself, John is also from the UK, but he_______________________ (live) in Australia for 6 years. I arrived at Dubai airport at around 8pm after a 4-hour flight from the UK. I met John at the airport and we checked into our hotel. I wanted to go and have a look around the city on the first evening, but John was really tired because he________________________ (sit) on a plane for 8 hours. I decided to go and look around the city myself. As I ____________________ (walk) through the city, I suddenly ______________________ (looked) up and saw the amazing Burj Khalifa tower. I________________________ (never see) anything quite so incredible in my whole life! Many people ____________________(tell) me that it was a magnificent building, but it is only when you see it that you realise just how big it is! I __________________________-(stare) at the tower when I suddenly _________________________ (realise) that I ______________________(left) my camera back at the hotel! The rest of the trip was also amazing, and since I have got back I______________________ (tell) people about it constantly. I’m kind of proud to declare that I______________________ (see) the tallest building in the world!
