Rome an Julie PROLOGUE ● Say that the story takes place In the beautiful city of Verona where a long-standing hatred between two families erupts into new violence, where civil blood makes civil hands unclean ( say that has been a crime ). ● A pair of star-crossed lovers take their lives and their unfortunate deaths put an end to their parents' feud→ Only their deaths were able to stop this hatred. ● The chorus says that this play is two hours long. If you listen to us patiently, we’ll make up for everything we’ve left out in this prologue onstage. ACT 1 The play opens with a fight between Capulet and Montague —> the Prince stops everyone saying that if there is another fightMontague and Capulet shall pay the ‘forfeit’ for it with their lives. Romeo reveals to Benvolio that he is in love with Rosaline but she doesn’t love him in return. Paris visits Lord Capulet to ask for Juliet’s hand in marriage. Lord Capulet thinks Juliet is too young to marry him. However, he later encourages Paris to invite her to a ball at his house. Lord Capulet sends a messenger to invite other guests to the ball. The messenger bumps into Romeo and Benvolio revealing to them the ball is taking place and that Rosaline is one of the guests. Benvolio suggests they go to the ball so Romeo can find someone else to fall in love with. Romeo agrees to go – not to find a new love but to prove that Rosaline is the prettiest. Romeo, Mercutio, and Benvolio are on their way to the ball. Romeo is having second thoughts about attending because he feels depressed about Rosaline, telling the others that he doesn’t want to go anymore. Finally, they encourage him to go to the ball They wear masks in order not to be recognized by their enemies. Meanwhile, Romeo meets Juliet at the ball and they kiss, with Juliet saying ‘You kiss by the book’. After leaving the party, Romeo leaves his friends and returns to meet Juliet. They then both find out who the other is. ACT 2 THE BALCONY SCENE Romeo climbs over the orchard wall into the Capulets' garden ● Juliet declares her love but she is unaware that Romeo is here —> is a soliloquy from the point of view of Juliet and a monologue ● she says that she loves Romeo as a man and that she doesn’t care about his name —> she loves his substance and she thinks that the name identifies better the person: names are just convention because a rose remains the same even if it is called in various ways depending on the language ● she also thinks that love makes people mature ● Romeo answers to Juliet —> even Romeo understands that he is a new man ( if Juliet didn’t say that Romeo wouldn’t recognize that) he doesn’t call her Juliet but dear saint= love of Renaissance (women are considered angels) Juliet recognizes Romeo→ she is preoccupied with his safety Romeo says that love can overcome all limits: love of Renaissance (if she proves her love he will face all obstacles) ● Romeo says in a prophetic line: a life without love is worse than death Romeo says to Friar Laurence that he wants to marry Juliet. Romeo and Juliet meet in secret at Friar Laurence’s cell with the Friar blessing them. ACT 3 Romeo and Juliet get married and Romeo also promises to work for peace between the two families. The groups of the two families meet and fight when Romeo arrives he refuses to fight with Tybalt. A fight breaks out between Mercutio and Tybalt which ends with Mercutio being stabbed. While dying Mercutio curses both houses of Capulet and Montague exclaiming ‘A plague o' both your houses! I am sped’. In revenge for his friend’s death, Romeo kills Tybalt. When the Prince arrives he decides to exile Romeo. Juliet waits for Romeo to join her after their marriage but the Nurse arrives with news of Tybalt’s death. At first, Juliet curses Romeo’s name but when she discovers what happened she asks to speak to him and realizes she needs to stand beside her husband. The Nurse agrees to get a message to Romeo. Friar convinces Romeo to run away to Mantua while things settle down in Verona. He tells him to go to Juliet first, to consummate their marriage. Paris visits Lord Capulet to seek Juliet’s hand in marriage but Juliet refuses and she decides to visit Friar Laurence.
