ROMEO E JULIET PLOT The story is set in Verona, where two families the Montagues and the Capulets are in conflict. The play opens with the prologue spoken by a chorus which explains the social context, the lover’s feelings, the idea of love, destiny and death. All play is divided into five acts: • In the first one, there are some dialogues about the courtly concept of love. It starts in Verona street and it ends with the meeting between Juliet, Capulets’ daughter, and Romeo, Montagues’ son • In the second act, there is the development off the two lovers’ relationship. Themes of lo love in Romeo and Juliet’s dialogue departs from courtly conventions. This act ends with the marriage between two lovers celebrated by a friend, Friar Laurence. • In the third act, there are public and private events: Romeo, in a fight, kills Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin because he killed his friend Mercutio, and so he is banished from Verona but before leaving he goes to Capulet’s house to meet Juliet and spend a nice wedding night. • The fourth act is the preparatory act for the final tragedy. To avoid a marriage with Count Paris organized by her father, Juliet takes a drug which makes her seem dead. So the Friar Laurence, who knows about this plane, sends a message to Romeo which never arrives. Instead Romeo receives the news about Juliet’s death and he comes back immediately. • In the last act, Romeo sees Juliet is dead so he decides to poisons himself. Romeo dies butt Juliet wakes up, sees Romeo and kills herself with a dagger A COMEDY OR A TRAGEDY? Romeo and Juliet can be considered a tragedy but also a comedy because it presents both elements. The comedy elements are: the istant attraction between two lovers, the masked balls, the comic servants and street fight. It differs from other comedies because in the end knowledge is not for everybody but only for the main characters. In the last scene, time has a grate importance because a minute of hesitation would have saved the two lover’s life. It’s a tragedy because two lovers have to fight against external forces which make their relationship difficult and their end is tragic. THEMES In Romeo and Juliet there are two important themes: one is the lack of knowledge, in fact there is bad communication. The tragedy is cost by unawareness and elements of chance and not by hold hate and young love. The second important theme is Juliet’s reflection on language which shows realism. She is very brave to fight for her love and she looks a real woman despite she is only 14. She confessions immediately her love for Romeo and she has the courage to take
