He chose Verona

because…

BENVOLIO

I pray thee, good Mercutio, let’s retire. The day is hot; the Capulets, abroad; And if we meet we shall not ’scape a brawl, For now, these hot days, is the mad blood stirring.

QUOTES

ROMEO AND JULIET:

Act 3, scene 1

He has never been to Verona or to Italy (in fact the geography of the city is not clear), but he was told stories about Verona by Venetian merchants who had been there and he assumed Verona was similar to Venice: city full of vitality and open to new influences. Besides Verona has a very hot weather during summer, which can flare people tempers and lead to fight, which was a common situation in that period.

He chose Verona

because…

QUOTES

PETRUCHIO

Verona , for a while I take my leave, My best belovèd and approvèd friend, Hortensio. And I trow this is his house. Here, sirrah Grumio. Knock, I say.”

THE TAMING OF THE SHREW:

Act 1, scene 3

Petruchio was a wealthy, loud, eccentric gentleman of Verona. He moved from Verona to Padua to increase his fortune by marrying rich.

Two Gentlemen of Verona

 (^) How the boys get to Milan from Verona, both inland cities, located 160 kilometers apart? As the play begins, Valentine is saying goodbye to his best friend: Act I, scene 1 “Once more adieu; my father at the road expects my coming, there to see me shipp’d .”  (^) However they got there, it’s obvious they came by water since Proteus, having just arrived in Milan greets Valentine, saying: Act II Scene 4 “Go on before... I must unto the road [the quay], to disembark some necessaries... .” Did Shakespeare mention Adige?

Most people then travelled by water, if near the sea then
along the coast, if inland on rivers, and where there were no
rivers, by barges on man-made canals that then and for
another two centuries connected most of the major inland
towns and cities of Italy.
Travel by water was faster, easier, and far less dangerous than
travel by land, as Shakespeare shows in the final act when
the two gents get held up by bandits in a forest outside
Milan.
The place from which Valentine and later Proteus
depart from Verona was easy enough to locate: a vast
quay just downstream from the great stone Ponte
Navi (Ship Bridge), destroyed in World War II.

Specific settings in the city:  (^) Montagues family lives probably in Via Delle Arche and to reach Capulets house you had to cross only a botanical garden;  (^) When Romeo was obligate to leave Verona, probably his famous verses were said, during his removal in front of Portone Della Brà ;  (^) It’s told that the famous clash between Romeo an Tybalt was done in Corso Cavour .  (^) «Delicious Verona! With its beautiful old buildings and charming countryside view from a distance feasible paths and tunnels with solid balaustrade. With its peaceful Roman bridges that trace the rigth path lighting, in today’s sunlight, shade of centuries old. With marble churches and quiet streets that echoed the shouts of Montagues and Capulets…» [Charles Dickens]

Who is Shakespeare?

There's no certain information about Shakespeare's life beside his
popularity and the popularity of his plays in England. We have no
official documents about his biography, his stay in London and
mostly about the university he attended.
In fact his lack of instruction and
cultural knowledge doesn't explain the
rich and various glossary and his use of
classical models. Also, none of the
other poets who lived during the 16th
century mentioned him. There also is a
theory about the plays linked to
Shakespeare not being written by him
but by a group of people.

Differences between the two poems:

  • (^) Romeus meets Juliet at Capulet’s feast and he passes by Juliet’s window many times before speaking to her
  • (^) Romeus and Juliet enjoy their marital bliss
  • (^) Lots of characters are irrelevant and appears only momentarily (Mercutio) - (^) Romeo marries Juliet in less
than a day after they saw each
other
  • (^) The lover’s time together starts
running out almost as soon as it
begins. They get married just
hours before Tybalt’s death
  • He emphasizes the pressure of
time by introducing some words
like: day, night, today,
tomorrow,…
  • (^) He introduces other characters
who play important roles later
in the drama (Tybalt)
  • (^) He fleshes out most characters
