3 THEME: FATHERS AND DAUGTHERS

4 THEME: RETHORIC AND POWER

5 THEME: THE WORLD AS A STAGE

1 THEME: WOMEN AND LOVE

An obsessive desire for love and power is at

the centre of Shakespeare’s tragedies.

His heroines play an active role.

Juliet finds the strenght to oppose her

parents, relatives and society that deny her

right to love.

She has the courage to risk everything for her

love, till to her death

3 THEME: FATHERS AND DAUGTHERS The contrast between fathers and daugthers is one of Shakespeare’s favourites. His daugthers were not weak and submissive creatures , although at that time women were legally subject to their fathers or husbands. In the comedies, youn girls in disagreement with their fathers often run away. In tragedies the contrasts take to death, like Juliet.

4 THEME: RHETORIC AND POWER In their search for both love and power , Shakespeare’s tragic heroes make large use of rhetoric. All his plays contain at least one long rhetorical speech spoken by the main character ( solyloquies or monologues ) and is connected with the main theme of the play. Rhetoric is effective in love and politics. Romeo conquers Juliet through rhetoric, the same does Otello with Desdemona. Mark Anthony wins the favour of Romans because he is a better orator than Brutus. Rhetoric contains a great potential also for evil. Iago convinces Otello that Desdemona was unfaithful through the power of words.
