Lawyer – is the general job title used for people who work as a solicitor, barrister or
attorney.
Barrister – a lawyer who gives advice and options to solicitors. He/she passed the exams of
the Bar Council of England & Wales at the end of their studies. They are specialists in
advocacy (speaking for someone in court)
Solicitor – a lawyer who gives legal advice to individuals and companies. He/she passed the
exams of the Law Society of England & Wales at the end of their studies.
Attorney – a lawyer who gives legal advice to individuals and companies. He/she passed
the exams in the USA at the end of their studies and is usually a member of the American
Bar Associations.
Criminal law vs civil law
Criminal law is the law that punishes acts against a person or against property that people
consider to be harmful to the whole community. The state prosecutes criminals.
Civil law is the law concerning the rights and duties of private individuals and companies
rather than criminal matters.
