Thomas Becket was murdered on 29 December 170, in Canterbury Cathedral. Becket was born in 1118 in London. As a child, he received a good education. He began a career in the Church as an administrator but, in 1154, he became Chancellor to King Henry II, the most important job in the kingdom. King Henry and Thomas Becket became great friends, for that reason, he appointed him as Archbishop of Canterbury. But Becket changed and instead of supporting the King he defended the power of the Church. After that Henry became very angry, Becket escape to France, where he stayed for six years, than he return to England. When he returned the people of Canterbury welcomed him as an hero and he continued to attack the power oh the King. When Henry heard of Thomas’s activities he sent four knights immediately to look for Thomas and kill him. But the knights enered the cathedral and kill the Archbishop. After the murder King Henry showed his sorrow by walked barefoot to Canterbury through the city with the monks, he was the first pilgrim and after him other pilgrim came all over the England and the Europe to visit the tomb of Becket. The Pope made him saint and his tomb was decorated by jewels, there were also many stories of miracles about sick people who were made well by the power of Saint Thomas. Becket’s bones ere lost but however you can still see the place were was murdered Becket and the stories of his miracles and there is also a famous windows which shows a portrait of Becket himself.
