HOW DO THEY WORK?

Every four years the american people decide

whether a democrat or a republican gets to live

in the White House for the next four years.

STEPS The Candidates About a year before the elections candidates from the two main political parties the Democrats and the Republicans begin their campaign trails. The Debates At the start of the campaigns the candidates from both parties participate in televised debates. The Primaries and Caucuses Beginning in February the main voting events Primaries and Caucuses will lead to a selection of delegates who will represent the people at the upcoming conventions. The Running Mates Around July presidential nominee hopefuls will start announcing their choice of “running mate”—the individual who will become vice president if the nominee is elected president.

STEPS The National Conventions At the National Conventions state delegates from the primaries and caucuses selected to represent the people will now “endorse” their favorite candidates and the final presidential nominee from each party will be officially announced at the end of the conventions. The Electoral College The Electoral college is a process in which electors or representatives from each state in number proportional to the state’s population cast their vote and determine who will be president. There are a total of 538 electors selected according to each state’s policy. To win the presidency the presidential nominee must receive at least 270 electoral votes. The General Election When Americans go to the polls on November 8 they will select their favorite presidential candidate and running mate. The presidential nominee with the most electoral votes becomes the President of the United States.

In a primary each candidate is awarded a certain amount of delegates

based on the amount of votes they receive.

Those delegates will later vote for their assigned candidate in the

National Convention, where a candidate must receive over half of the

delegates vote to win the party's nomination.

However no candidate receives over half of the delegate votes at the

convention the party renegotiates its entries into the presidential

race, sometimes the delegates will have to vote again and they don't

necessarily have to vote for their candidates again.

THE NATIONAL CONVENTION

STEP 2: THE ELECTION DAY

Once the two parties have officially chosen who is going head-to-head in the

presidential race, the actual General Election is held on the Tuesday after the first

monday in November, when registered voters over 18 get to vote for their

president.

However the president is not elected directly here either, the vote tally for each

candidate determines how many electors are awarded to that candidate, these

electors will then elect the candidate.

Once the electors have been awarded it's clear

who will be the next president of the US, while

officially the decision is only made by the

Electoral College, which is the body made up of

the awarded electors.

This is usually 41 days after election day, when

the electors vote in their state: the votes are

then counted in Congress around the beginning

of January and it's in Congress too where the

next occupant of the White House is later

officially announced.

US CONGRESS BUT WHAT'S THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE?

435 representatives

100 senators

3 electors from the District of Columbia.

The number of the electors is equal to the total voting

membership of the United States Congress:

All the singles' states' electors go to the candidate

most voted by the population, for example if the

Democratic candidate win in California, he has the

vote of the 55 californian electors.

THE INAUGURATION

The inauguration of the next president

takes place on the 20th January to formally

end the election year.
