INTRODUCTION
In recent times, we witnessed a growth for what concerns the use and the possibility
of access to the brand-new technologies; globalization has made possible for a wide
range of people all around the world to approach a wide range of knowledge
through magazines, television, radios and websites.
What I consider interesting about these kinds of processes is the fact that it is
possible for (almost) everyone to reach all kind of information, even the more
specific and technical ones.
Luckily, even the psychological field, as much as the other scientific branches, has
emancipated itself from the only professional and university environment: in fact,
until the 20th century researchers had little or no contact with the popular needings,
but at the current moment even non-specialized readers can receive a supply of
health care information.
Of course, as a consequence a logistical problem arises, and it regards how to
communicate with the public in a simple and immediate way.
For this reason, a triangular communication must be established (so the information
has to be delivered to everyone by the intervention of an intermediate) and
specialistic articles need to be reshaped in order to reach the common public.
Let’s see how.

INTRODUCTION

In recent times, we witnessed a growth for what concerns the use and the possibility of access to the brand-new technologies; globalization has made possible for a wide range of people all around the world to approach a wide range of knowledge through magazines, television, radios and websites. What I consider interesting about these kinds of processes is the fact that it is possible for (almost) everyone to reach all kind of information, even the more specific and technical ones. Luckily, even the psychological field, as much as the other scientific branches, has emancipated itself from the only professional and university environment: in fact, until the 20 th century researchers had little or no contact with the popular needings, but at the current moment even non-specialized readers can receive a supply of health care information. Of course, as a consequence a logistical problem arises, and it regards how to communicate with the public in a simple and immediate way. For this reason, a triangular communication must be established (so the information has to be delivered to everyone by the intervention of an intermediate) and specialistic articles need to be reshaped in order to reach the common public. Let’s see how.

Chapter 1 – METHODS A comparison between specialistic articles and “popular” articles highlights the main tendency when it comes to write a text accessible to everyone: the use of plain and simple sentences, maybe accompanied by images (and, I add, un uncomplicated layout when it’s about posts on the Internet); also, technical language is clarified as much as possible. These following are the most used popularizing strategies:  Designation: it consists in explaining concepts with straight metaphors.  Definition: it consists in providing further explanations of a term/concept.  Paraphrase (or reformulation): the aim is to make a concept easier to understand by making the sentences less complex (in regard to grammar and lexicon, mainly).  Analogy: it consists of make comparisons between the specialistic concept and a field of knowledge surely known by the common person).  Generalization: it is the extension of the validity of a concept to other situations/other people.  Exemplification: it consists in furnishing specific examples of general concepts.  Explication: technical concepts are explicated in a simpler way, but using specialistic language. Example: Several studies have reported decreased GABA-benzodiazepine and 5- HT 1A receptor binding in the amygdala, medial prefrontal cortex, insular cortex, and brain stem in panic disorder. Some prescription drugs can help you calm down by influencing levels of GABA, a brain chemical that improves mood and decreases distress. In this case, the expert talks about the topic by describing the effective and objective configuration of the problem in space, while the intermediate (the journalist) does it by providing explanations and explications. For what purpose is the simplification done? The common public does not need professional information about science, but just wants to keep up with the recent developments/to have advice. It in not necessarily a problem: the subtle alteration of the original text is unavoidable when it comes to move from a linguistic register to another. Also, I find it very interesting that there is this effort to make people aware of what surrounds them.
