Special uses of ‘to be’ (Unit 3 - page 16):

  • Be hungry (= aver fame) – I am hungry.
  • Be thirsty (= aver sete)
  • Be sleepy (= aver sono)
  • Be hot (= aver caldo)
  • Be cold (= aver freddo)
  • Be right (= aver ragione)
  • Be wrong (= aver torto)
  • Be afraid / Be frightened (= aver paura)
  • Be late (= fare tardi / essere in ritardo)
  • Be in a hurry (= aver fretta)
  • Price – How much is it? It is 99 euros.
  • Age – How old are you? I am eighteen.
  • Health – How are you? I am well.
  • Professions – What is her job? She is a teacher.

Special uses of ‘to have’:

  • Have breakfast/lunch/dinner
  • Have a drink/some wine/tea
  • Have a meal/a pizza/a sandwich (= fare un pasto)
  • Have a shower/a bath
  • Have a lesson
  • Have a party
  • Have a holiday
  • Have a good time
  • Have a rest (= riposarsi)
  • Have a swim (= fare una nuotata)
  • Have a break
  • Have fun (= divertirsi)

Present simple - To have got – auxiliary verb – used only for the Present Simple (Unit 2 - page 14) Affirmative form Negative form Interrogative form Short answers I have got have not got Have I got…? Yes, I have. No, I haven’t. You have got have not got Have you got …? Yes, you have. No, you haven’t. He/She/It has got has not got Has he/she/it got …? Yes, he/she/it has. No, he/she/it hasn’t. We have got have not got Have we got …? Yes, we have. No, we haven’t. You have got have not got Have you got …? Yes, you have. No, you haven’t. They have got have not got Have they got …? Yes, they have. No, they haven’t. Example: She has got a dog - positive She hasn’t got a dog - negative Has she got a dog? – question Have got is used to talk about:

  1. Possession – I have got a computer
  2. Family relationship – She has got a sister
  3. Description of structures or services – This room has got two windows
  4. Description of physical characteristics – The twins have got red hair
  5. Health problems – She has got a headache
