Sport facilities in Messina: improvements needed?
Whether in a big city or in a small town, facilities play a crucial role for citizens, especially when
it comes to sport facilities, like gyms and swimming pools.
Unfortunately my birthplace, Messina, doesn't offer a homogeneous distribution of facilities,
because of its territorial conformation; however there are some very well-equipped structures
that are suitable for everyone who wants to get fit. It could be said for example talking about the
CUS, a polyvalent centre that hosts football fields, tennis and volleyball courts, and also a
covered swimming pool. Based on my experience, there's nothing I can complain about: every
single facility in this area is quite new and well maintained, and moreover can be used at any
time of the year, thanks to the covering system. Surely it is the best sports centre in Messina,
without any objection.
Moving to another part of the city, we can't leave out the stadium facilities that also include
Palarescifina gym. Apart from the capacity of the stadium, which is the biggest in Sicily, there
aren't many positive aspects about it. The structure is old and neglected and it clearly needs
some structural improvements, in addition to safety guarantees. In my opinion it is a real shame
not to take action, especially if we think about how astonishing the stadium was in the early
2000s, when the Messina football team played in the major League.
As well as the stadium there are many other facilities fallen into disuse, but with some
improvements I'm convinced that they would turn out to be useful again for the community.
