Leggere Ziggy, David Bowie e la letteratura inglese: da George Orwell a Hainf Kureishi PREFAZIONE Jake Arnott defines David Bowie as a “furious reader”, in fact he reads Dante, Flaubert, Eliot and Orwell. Critchley hilights the impossibility of reading Bowie’s lyrics on a autobiographical’s key because Bowie becomes another person in each song. His songs are characterised by a strong theatrics thanks to the author’s ability to create new characters. His albums His album “Aladdin Sane” comes from one of many masks of Bowie. The main tram of this album is called as the album and is inspired by a novel by Waugh, who wrote about London in a difficult situation, such as wars. Bowie’s glam is similar to the one very first one pop star, as known as Oscar Wilde, indeed Bowie and Wilde has a lot in common, such has the ability to known the “truth of mask” and the impossibility to think about the art outside capitalism. In 1995, Bowie released his first conceptual album, called “1. Outside”. Another Bowie’s album is called “Heathen”, and it was conceptualised after the attack of terrorism on September 11th. The album “The Next Day” express the desire of reading the present using the key of the past. One of the most important lead single of Bowie is “Lazarus”, indeed Wilde talks about Lazarus in one of his works. PRIMO CAPITOLO In 2009, Jones directed a film called “MOON”. The meeting between Bowie and the mood has taken place through the cinema and the literature. While our solar system’s planets were born, our planet, the earth, created the moon. There are a lot of novels that talks about the moon, and one of this inspired Bowie to write his own song, called “The Man Who Sold The World”, this novel is called “The Man Who Sold The Moon”. The moon is been a central subject for pop music, and it has effect also on Bowie, who will release “Space Oddity”, which will be the lead single of his album “David Bowie”. His most famous album is “the raise and fall of Ziggy Sturdast and the Spider from Mars”, Ziggy is one of his masks. Thanks to this mask, Bowie menages to talk about homosexuality as normality, by an event take place on a musical show. But everything has an end, and so alzo Ziggy. CAPITOLO 2 In Bowie’s opinion the literature is a way to comprehend what was going on around him. In 1974 he released “Diamond Dogs”. While writing this album, Bowie was fascinated by “1984” by Orwell. This novel highlights how totalitarian regimes can suppress freedom, such as freedom of thought, by reducing the language so people can’t have their own thoughts. In “Diamond Dog”’s cover album, Bowie is laying on the floor with a body of a dog. The intro’s song “diamond dog” is characterised by clapping, and it refers to the ability of music to guide people in the right way, the song “rebel rebel” refers to Wiston, who was accused of not being able to be rebel. The song “1984” has a seren tone, and it makes us believe that Wiston found someone to believe in. Bowie is the first singer to transform music into acting and vice versa. So he create a “play within the play”. As we said before, wiston hasn’t a rebel soul, but Bowie has it. TERZO CAPITOLO Another Bowie’s mask is “Thin White Duke”, characterised by the interest on german culture. Bowie will met his first teacher in 1967, he was Kemp. Bowie uses Kemp’s lessons about performing, indeed Kamp said that the performer and the character that the performer is acting shouldn’t have difference among them. Thanks to this we will have a lot of masks, such as “The White Duke” for “Station to Station”. Another important figure that will be such an icon for Bowie is Isherwood. They met at Los Angeles. Isherwood moved there to live in peace with his homosexuality, but we have to remember that Isherwood had lived a long time in Berlin, so Bowie asked him to talk about Berlin during the ‘30 and the ‘70. The fall of Berlin’s wall is such a great inspiration for Bowie, so that he wrote three album about this event: ⁃ Low : is the soundtrack to a desolate and desolate mental landscape characterized by the pain and alienation of the protagonist ⁃ Heroes: the co-presence conflicting and contradictory impulses. The song “Heroes” presents a dialog that highlights the story of two young people standing right at the wall ⁃ Lodger: put in evidence the idea of a city, such as Berlin, with a lot of culture. So, Bowie wrote a lot of song to commemorate the fall of Berlin’s wall, and he embodied this songs in three albums, so we call it “the Berlin trilogy of Bowie”. In 2913 Bowie will return on this theme with another song, called “where are you now?” QUARTO CAPITOLO IN 1989 Bowie, with other singers, will be protagonist of a soundtrack of the film “Absolute Beginners”. This film was taken from a nose, written by Temple. This novel talks about some issues related to race and multiculturalism. QUINTO CAPITOLO In 1993 Bowie will be part of the soundtrack of “The Buddha of Suburbia”, written by Hainf Kureishi. Kureishi makes a real artistic rewriting of the capital of London, indeed he wrote about something that was being challenged, such as racial and gender discussions. these descriptions are considered in “My Beautiful Laundrette”. In this film, a young pakistan, runs a laundry and has as an employee Johnny, a white boy who sooner or later will become his love. Kureishi’s first novel is “the Buddha of Sububria”, wrote in 1990. Kureishi stages a polyphonic dialogue with a lot of punctuation, so the syntax is composed by short sentences and thanks to this we’ll have a sense of restlessness, as we said in patchwork girl. The protagonist is stuck at a crossroads: ⁃ he fells a sense of belonging to the extreme suburbs ⁃ he wants to look for somewhere else, he wants to fell something new, come different feeling. This somewhere else will be at the center of London. For Karim London isn’t his place and he will be forced to create a new identity that didn’t fits him well (as patchwork girl). So Karim thinks about London as a place where people can mold their personality. In this novel we have two different section: ⁃ The Suburbs: the London that Karim will dream of and the most important city for Kureishi ⁃ The City: where everyone can mold their personality The importance of the music into this novel will be so important such as we will find a structure that will reminde us the musical’s structure of an album. As soon as Bowie become a popstar, he will become a character into a short novel, called “Gabriel’s gift”. What role can Bowie play if not a role related to music? Indeed Kureishi wrote about this man, who is going through a lot problem with is wife and with his job. This man will find a safe place with his son, Gabriel, who will take him to remember all the memories linked to music. The cast of the film of “The Buddha of suburbia” will be a great cast and they will be able to reproduce the effect that we will find on the novel, but it will be full of sex scenes and it will be full of drug references. We have to highlight the fact that the story of the novel will be rap resented by Karim’s point of view, instead of the film, in which we will find the camera’s point of view. Nick Hornbly, in one of his essay called “Starman Jones” will put in evidence the similitudes between
