A la vćritć, il ne s'agit pas d'un manuscrit autographe du maftre mais d'une copie faite, vers 1890, par un de ses ćlżves nommć : SFEARNS, dont on ne dócouvre au- cune trace dans la biographie du maitre ni dans les archi- ves du Conservatoite Royal de Musique de Bruxelles. Soucieux de nous assurer de I'authenticitć des exemples contenus dans le document, le manuscrit a ćtć photocopić et adressć 4 quelques ćlżves d'Eugtne Ysaye encore en vie. Tous ont reconnu qw'il s'agissait bien d'une sorte de canevas du travail journalier recommandć par le maitre. Nous pouvons d'autre part affirmer que ces « Exercices et Gammes » constituaient la base de la gymnastique technique matinale d'Eugtne Ysaye lui-móme qui y ajou- tait des variantes improvisćes d'une ćblouissante fantaisie. Par ailleurs, lorsqu'il fut en possession — jeńne encore — de la magistrale technique qui caractórisait son jeu et dont ses SONATES POUR VIOLON SEUL constituent la synthese, Eugtne Ysaye ne « *ravaillait» jamais les traits d'un concerto ou autre pitce de son immense róper- toire, mais uniquement leur construction interprótative qui toutefois ne prenait jamais un caracttre uniforme et rigide. YSAYE, 1967. 9484 NOTICE 'The book containing exercises and scales, which formed the daily preparatory practice recommended by Eugene Ysaye to his pupils, was unearthed in the YSAYE MUSEUM, Litge, among a pile of manuscripts and rough drafts in a hcap of odd papers. In fact, it is not an autograph manuscript of the master, but a copy made round about 1890 by one of his pupils named ŚTEARNS, of whom no trace can be discovered in the master's biography nor in the archives of the Brussels Royal Academy of Music. In order to make sure of the authenticity of the examples contained in the document, a photostat copy was made of the manuscript and sent to some of Eugene Ysaye's pupils still living. 'They all agreed that it was a kind of outline of the daily practice recommended by the master. We can also state that these "Exercises and Scales” formed the basis of Eugene Ysaye's own technical gym- nastics in the mornings, to which he added improvised variants of 'dazzling fantasy. Moreover, when still in his youth and possessing the masterly technique which was a feature of his playing and of which his SONATAS FOR AN UNACCOM- BANIED VIOLIN constitute the synthesis, Eugene Ysaye never "worked" the brilliant passages of a concerto or some other piece of his immense repertoire, but only their interpretative construction, which, however, never as- sumed a uniform or rigid character.
