Track 2 MiniMatura Unit 1
Katie: Hi Martin. It’s Katie.
Martin: Hi Katie, how are you?
Katie: I’m fine, thanks. Listen, I know you like music, do you fancy coming to a concert? It’s at the town hall, a group of
us are going. The Goblins are playing, you know, Tom’s brother’s the drummer. They’re quite good, you’d like it.
Martin: Oh that sounds cool. I like the Goblins, I’ve heard them before. When is it?
Katie: Oh, sorry, it’s on Friday. It starts at seven.
Martin: Oh, no. I can’t. I mean, thanks for asking. I’d like to come but I can’t. I go to the pool on Fridays.
Katie: The pool? Do you mean you go swimming? Every Friday?
Martin: Well, yes, that’s when we train. Fridays and Tuesdays. I can’t miss it, well, only if I’m ill.
Katie: Who’s ‘we’? Are you in some kind of team or something?
Martin: Yes, I swim for the London Schools team.
Katie: Wow, that’s amazing. I didn’t know. I bet that’s hard work.
Martin: Yes, it is. I get fed up with it sometimes. But most of the time I enjoy it. And it keeps me fit.
Katie: Yes, I’m sure it does. I should do more exercise. I don’t really like sport, that’s the only problem. I’m too lazy.
Martin: You’re good at dancing, though. That’s good exercise. Maybe you could do more?
Katie: Yes, I suppose I should, actually.
Martin: Good idea. Thanks for asking me, anyway. Have fun.
Katie: You too. See you. Bye.
Track 3 MiniMatura Unit 2
ONE
Speaker 1: I’m here to tell you about an exciting new washing powder, one that really does bring the bright back to white
and says to grey: go away. What is it? It’s Whoosh, that’s what it is. Yes, we’ve used new formula 17SPA to bring
you Whoosh. We’re confident that once you’ve tried Whoosh, you’ll never look back. You might need
sunglasses, though.
TWO
Speaker 2: The story goes that Benjamin Franklin wanted to find out more about electricity. They say that he waited for a
bad storm with thunder and lightning, then flew a kite. Before he launched the kite up into the air he tied a
metal key to the string. The electricity from the storm passed through the key and gave him an electric shock.
Actually, a lot of people don’t really believe this story.
THREE
Speaker 3: I was camping with some friends last summer. We all had our own small tents, but there wasn't enough room
for us all to sit together. So I came up with the idea of buying zippables for our next camping holiday. They are
tents that connect. You can have any number of tents in a row, join them up when you want to, then put the
side down and you have your own space again. Whoever invented them was a genius, it’ll solve the problem.
FOUR
Speaker 4: It’s good – you should check it out. They show loads of weird inventions you know, things that just aren’t
going to work. My personal favourite is the solar-powered submarine I mean, how stupid is that? Oh, then
there’s the umbrella hat. Actually, that’s not such a bad idea, I suppose Anyway, it’s on every Friday. You’d
like it.
FIVE
Speaker 5: I was just experimenting, I didn’t really need it. I tested it with a few words, you know, ‘one … two … three
four … testing, testing,’ that kind of thing, and I was amazed, the words just appeared on the screen, really fast.
So then I tried a more complicated sentence and it worked perfectly. Well, I was very impressed! I’m going to
use it more often now.
SIX
Speaker 6: There’s an app for everything these days, it’s amazing. Did you know, there’s one that can measure your heart
rate just by looking at you. Honestly! You just hold it up near your face and it can see slight changes in the
colour of your skin. Isn’t that amazing? What’s next, that’s what I want to know.
Track 4 MiniMatura Unit 3
ONE
Speaker 1: What’s this? You haven’t seen the latest Spangle film yet? You’re really missing out. It’s the film everyone’s
talking about, packed full of action, thrills and surprises. Jamie Beacon gives the performance of his life as a mad
but lovable scientist who makes an astonishing discovery. This is the must-see film of the year, so what are you
waiting for? Get a move on and book your ticket now, before it’s too late.

Bartosz Michałowski, Angela Bandis and Izabela Michalak Published by Pearson, 2019 TWO Speaker 2 : Good evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome. We hope you enjoy tonight’s performance. The management would like to remind you that photography is not allowed. You are also requested to make sure that all mobile phones are turned off. There will be a twenty-minute interval during which light refreshments will be available in the foyer. Please do not smoke anywhere in the building. Thank you for your cooperation in these matters. THREE Speaker 3 : Well, the stars are certainly out tonight. Quite a few celebrities have already taken their seats inside the theatre and others are arriving now. I’ve just seen Freddie Highmore, he walked past on the red carpet a few minutes ago. And, oh, right, there’s Emma Watson! She’s looking stunning as usual. I wonder if I can manage to get a few words with her, oh, Emma? Emma? Just one question, please. No, she’s gone over to talk to some fans. Well, never mind, maybe later, after the ceremony. I’m sure she’ll come out with an award. FOUR Speaker 4: It was OK, I mean, nothing special to be honest but entertaining enough. I mean, the acting was brilliant, specially Julia Roberts, she’s so clever, isn’t she? It’s just that the story itself didn’t really work, I didn’t really care about the characters, I wasn't really interested in how it would end. I liked the music, though, I’d like to get the soundtrack. It was probably the best thing about the film, in my opinion. FIVE Sue : How about Friends? Tom : Oh no, not that one, I’ve seen it so many times. Sue : I know, Tom, me too, but it’s always good for a laugh. Tom : No, really, let’s watch something else. What else is there? Sue : Ummm, how about this? I haven’t watched it yet, someone lent it to me a few weeks ago. It’s supposed to be funny. Tom : Ummm, maybe, but I’m not really in the mood. Have you got any sci-fi? Sue : Yes, I have. But what about this? It’s truly scary. Tom : Yeah, go on then, let’s give it a go. SIX Woman : Tell me about this one. It’s beautiful. Man : Oh that one, yes, it’s a favourite of mine. It was quite by chance, I was driving home late one afternoon and it caught my eye. I just had to stop. Woman : The colour of the sky is just amazing. Man : Yes, isn’t it? I was so lucky, I was there at exactly the right moment to take it. Woman : Lucky, well, maybe. But it takes skill, and a good eye … Man : Well, yes, perhaps, and some good equipment!

Track 5 MiniMatura Unit 4

Speaker: OK, let’s start in here, this is the living room. As you can see it’s a lovely bright room, it faces south so you get the sun most of the day. There’s a good view of the garden from the window. Then through here you have the kitchen and dining room. It’s fully fitted with a smart new cooker, fridge freezer, washing machine, dishwasher – the lot. All included in the price. OK, now I’ll show you the bedrooms, if you’d like to follow me … TWO Al: Oh, hi, Sue. How was your holiday? What was the accommodation like? Sue : Hmmm, not as nice as it looked in the brochure. Al : Oh that’s a shame, what was wrong with it? Sue : Well, it was quite noisy, for a start. We had quite a nice view over the town, but we had to keep the windows open at night because of the heat, and then of course we could hear all the traffic, and people shouting and laughing, music, you know … Al : What was the food like? Sue : Not at all bad actually. And I’ve never seen such a beautiful beach before – but I wouldn’t go again in August, it was so crowded. THREE Cathy : Hi Ed. Say, have you ever been to Joe’s new house? Ed : Oh hi Cathy. No, I haven’t. How long have they lived there? Cathy : Only about six months, I think. You should go and see it. Ed : Why? Cathy : Well, it’s weird. In a good way. It’s what you’d call an eco-house, I think. Ed : Wow! So what’s it like? Has it got solar panels on the roof? Cathy : Yes, it has. He says they don’t have to pay for electricity at all. And the walls are made of mud. Ed : You’re joking! Cathy : No, honestly.

Bartosz Michałowski, Angela Bandis and Izabela Michalak Published by Pearson, 2019 THREE Speaker 3 : Sometimes I start really early and have the evenings to myself, sometimes it’s the other way round. I don’t work nights, not yet. I spend some of my time at the front desk, talking to the public. I enjoy that, probably the most. Then there’s an awful lot of paper work – that’s the bit I dislike, well, we all do. It takes up so much time. I usually go out in a car for a few hours. That’s always with someone else. We answer calls, check out trouble spots, oh and we look out for speeding motorists. We get a lot of those round here. FOUR Speaker 4 : No, not an office job! Can you imagine it? He can’t sit still for more than five minutes, he’d go crazy indoors all day. No, he needs some kind of outdoor job. He worked all last winter as a ski instructor in Switzerland, it was a holiday job but he’d love to do something like that all the time. It isn’t practical, I suppose. But maybe a sports teacher, something like that? He’d be good at that. FIVE Speaker 5 : I was very early, in fact I had enough time to go to a coffee shop before I went in. By nine o’clock I was really nervous, I can tell you. Anyway it wasn’t so bad. The manager, his name is Jason Hardwick, showed me round and introduced me to the people in my team. I’m going to work with someone called Amy for the first month, she has to train me, I think. So I spent the rest of the day sitting next to her and just, well, watching what she did. It was OK but a bit boring to tell you the truth. I mean, it isn’t exactly very difficult. I just want to get on with it really. SIX Speaker 6 : Are you looking for adventure? Would you like to travel, learn new skills, meet amazing people and serve your country? If your answer to these questions is YES, and if you’re over sixteen, we have just the job for you. No, it isn’t a job. It’s a way of life. Interested? Give us a call today on 1029 3844, or visit us online. A whole new life in the army is waiting for you.

Track 8 MiniMatura Unit 7

Lucy : Hi, Matt. You’ve just been to Paris, haven’t you? Matt : Oh, hi, Lucy. Yes, that’s right. We were there for a week. Lucy : Lucky you. I bet it you had a great time. Matt : Well, actually it was spoiled really, because of what happened on the first day. Lucy : Why? What happened? Matt : Well, when we landed, they couldn’t find our luggage. It was on the wrong plane, apparently. Lucy : Oh no. That’s awful. Matt : Yes. My brother lost his laptop. I told him not to put it in his suitcase but did he listen? No! Lucy : So what happened? Matt: Well, we had to fill in lots of forms, and hang around at the airport for ages, then they told us to go shopping and buy some new clothes. Lucy : That sounds OK. I suppose they gave you the money? Matt : No, they didn’t. Lucy : What, you had to use your own money? Matt : Well yes. We’ll get it back, apparently, from the insurance company. But we had to pay at the time and we couldn’t really afford much. Lucy : Oh, right. What did you buy? Matt : I got a few T-shirts, shorts, underwear. Some jeans, and some trainers. Lucy : Lucky you, shopping in Paris! I’d love to do that. Matt : Yeah, well … I wanted to go sightseeing not shopping. Lucy : Yes, I suppose so … What happened about your brother’s laptop? Did he get a new one in Paris? Matt : No, no way, they cost too much. He’s got the old one back now anyway. Lucy : Oh, so they found your bags in the end? Matt : Yes, finally. But only after we were back home again.

Track 9 MiniMatura Unit 8

ONE

Speaker : My dad used to get really bad headaches. He tried taking aspirins but they didn’t work. The headaches were worst in the mornings when he woke up. Mum was really worried but the doctor couldn’t find anything seriously wrong with him. In the end, it was his dentist who had an idea. My dad’s teeth aren’t straight and this causes a problem with his jaw. The dentist suggested holding a pencil between his teeth. Not biting it hard, just holding it there. He had fewer headaches but, of course, he couldn’t hold the pencil in his mouth at night. Now that he knew what the problem was, he went back to the dentist who made him a plastic shield for his teeth. He wears it at night and now he doesn’t get headaches at all.

Bartosz Michałowski, Angela Bandis and Izabela Michalak Published by Pearson, 2019 TWO A : I’m really excited about the school trip to France, aren’t you? B : No, I’m not. I hate ferries. I get seasick. A : Really? Do you feel sick now? B : No, I’m fine on buses. I don’t feel sick in planes or cars either. Just on boats. I feel sick before we even leave the port. A : Have you tried taking tablets? B : Yes, but they never work. A : So, what are you going to do? We’ll be at Dover soon. B : Well, I looked on the Internet and I read about a cure. That’s why I’ve got these lemons. It said that, as soon as I feel sick, I should start sucking the lemon. A : Lemons eh? I hope it works. It’s a shame you can’t eat something else. B : Well, it says olives work too but I hate olives. They make me feel worse than travelling on a boat! THREE A : (coughing) B : Wow! That’s a bad cough. A : I know. I feel OK but I can’t stop coughing. I’ve got a ticket for the theatre tonight but I don’t think I’ll go. I’ll feel too embarrassed. B : How long have you had it? A : Well, I had a cold all last week, starting last Sunday. I was sneezing all week. Then, on Thursday I think it was, the sneezing stopped and I started coughing. I’ve been taking cough medicine for the last two days but it doesn’t do any good. B : Try this. A : Chocolate? B : Dark chocolate. Eat a small piece every half an hour. A : But why? Chocolate can’t stop a cough. B : According to a website I read, it can. It’s got something called Theobromine in it. Milk chocolate doesn’t have it. Here. Take the whole bar and enjoy the theatre. A : Thanks. I’ll let you know if it works.

Track 10 End-of-Year Test – Task 1

Ella : Hey Tom. Are you still working? It’s late! Tom : Hey Ella. I’m fine. I just want to finish reading through these notes. Ella : Why don’t you take a break, at least? Tom : I don’t have time. I’ve got to revise my Physics. The exam’s next week. Ella : I know, I’m doing it too, remember? But honestly, you should relax, or you’ll make yourself ill. Tom : It’s easy for you to say, you don’t have to do any work. You know it all already. You got top marks in the last test we had. Ella : Well, maybe I did, but I don’t know why you think I know everything, it certainly isn’t true. I worked hard for that test, that’s all. Tom : Well, there you go. I have to work hard now. Ella : Yes, I know. But I think you’re doing too much. Look, why don’t we go and play basketball tomorrow, like we did last week. I enjoyed that. Tom : So did I, but I’m not in the mood, not till after the exams. But you know, you’re right, I do need a break I suppose. I think I’ll go and watch Win A Million. You know, the quiz show. It’s on in a minute I think. It’s my favourite programme. Ella : Oh no, is it really? I hate it. Actually I can’t stand anything like that. Tom : Oh well, I’m going to watch it, anyway. Bye then. Ella : OK, bye Tom. See you.

Track 11 End-of-Year Test – Task 2

ONE

Speaker 1 : Oh, hi, it’s Marty here. Listen, I’ve got the tickets, like I said. Ummm, the match starts at 3.00, so I thought we could meet up at half past one. That should be enough time, don't you think? So, do you want to come round here, or shall I come to yours? OK, well, let me know. Oh, and, the tickets were £20 … TWO Speaker 2 : Ross … Briers … oh, nice pass, Robin’s got it, he’s moving forward, he’s in with a chance there, the goal’s wide open, oh what a chance, City are pushing forward and … oh, Norris gets the ball and runs with it, the man’s so fast, he makes it look easy, the crowd are going crazy … oh, now it’s a free kick for United, who’s going to take it? Donaldson, he passes to Ross, and … oh, good save. What a match!
