Reasoning

Differences

Inductive Reasoning

  • Uses^ patterns^ to^ make generalizations
  • Specific^ General
  • Science
  • Conjecture^ generalizations made using inductive reasoning (hypothesis) Deductive Reasoning
  • Based^ on^ Facts. (definitions)
  • General^ Specific
  • Mathematics
  • Conditional^ –^ If^ p^ then^ q (p being the hypothesis and q being the conclusion)

Make a conjecture

  • Twelve^ geometry^ students^ were^ given^ a^ list^ of^50 words to memorize. The next day, each student had to list as many words as they could remember. The results are listed below.
  • Make a conjecture about based on the results. Females can remember more items in a list than males.

Show that the conjecture is false by finding a counterexample. Supplementary angles are linear pairs. The supplementary angles do not have to be adjacent, so the conjecture is false.

I have some new if ‐ then statements for your math class to consider: If you send your husband to buy diapers without being very specific, then he will buy the wrong kind. If he buys the wrong kind, then you will notice at 3:00 a.m. when you run out of the right size. If you run out of the right size, then you will be forced to use one of the sample diapers mailed to you. If you use the sample diaper, then it will leak. If it leaks, then it will wet the entire baby's outfit, the blanket the baby is wrapped in, and the waterproof pad under the baby. And so went my morning... I now get the joy of bathing sad baby and then going back to bed. ....oh and having to go buy the right diapers.

Law of Syllogism

If I study for my math test, then I will make an A. If I make an A, then my parents will take me out to dinner.

  • Therefore,^ If^ I^ study^ for^ my^ math^ test,^ then my parents will take me out for dinner.

Law of Syllogism

Inline skaters live dangerously. If you live dangerously, then you like to dance.

  • Therefore…if^ you^ are^ an^ inline^ skater, then you like to dance.

If someone is Texan, then he is an American. Jim is a Texan.

  • Therefore,^ Jim^ is^ an^ American.
