Please submit your homework on this sheet. If you need more space than is available,
please attach additional sheets of paper.
1. A spool of wire of mass M and radius R is unwound under a constant force F (see
below). The spool is a uniform solid cylinder that does not slip.
(a) Draw extended free-body diagram for the spool (i.e. draw all of the forces on the
spool)
(b) Show that the acceleration of the center of mass is 4F/(3M).

  1. A spool of wire of mass M and radius R is unwound under a constant force F (see below). The spool is a uniform solid cylinder that does not slip.

(a) Draw extended free-body diagram for the spool (i.e. draw all of the forces on the spool)

(b) Show that the acceleration of the center of mass is 4 F /(3M).

(c) Show that the force of friction is to the right and is equal in magnitude to F /3.

(d) Show that if the cylinder starts from rest and rolls without slipping, then the speed

of its center of mass after it has rolled through a distance d is 8 F d /(3 M ).

Hint: Use Work-Kinetic Energy Theorem. The work done by the force F is equal to W F =F 2 d , since if the center of mass advances by the distance d , the end of the wire (where the F is applied to) advances by 2 d.
