Q. Write a letter to the editor of a newspaper highlighting barriers to accessibility of inclusive education in Pakistan. Pakistan Karachi 18 th^ May 2023 The Editor The Dawn news Karachi, Pakistan Subject: Barriers to accessibility of inclusive education in Pakistan Respected Sir/ Ma’am I am Rishaeel Gul, student of Sindh Madressat-ul-Islam University, department of Education. I am writing to you to highlight the barriers to accessibility of inclusive education in Pakistan. The inclusive education learners face various issues while accessing inclusive education. In many parts of Pakistan, and in many institutions the curriculum is not updated and it does not consider the needs of inclusive learners. Another issue is, that many teachers and staffs are untrained, and also, there’s not enough and accessible resources for the inclusive learners. The most highlighting issue/barrier is the attitude of people towards them, even in today’s era, people still have negative attitude for the inclusive learners. The infrastructure also adds to their learning difficulties, as these inclusive learners specially, the visually impaired and the physically disabled are unable to get the comfortable environment, because, there’s no appropriate resources for them. The chairs in the classrooms are fixed and not according to the needs of physically disabled students as they require movable and specially designed chairs in the classes. Also, because of these kind of chairs the wheelchair users can’t take their wheelchairs inside the classroom and they have to sit on the chairs that are present in the classroom, which is not comfortable for them. The visually impaired students don’t get the audio versions of the material taught in the class, and have difficulties to keep up with their learning and to achieve their learning goals. Moreover, if they want to go to other places such as: libraries, canteens, and
classes, it is hard for them because of the infrastructure. Another issue that needs to be highlighted is of the teachers, since the inclusive educational institutions are for every student, be it special or disabled or non-disabled students, the teachers need to provide resources and materials according to every individual’s need, however, since they’re not trained so it is hard for them to focus on every student as an individual and provide them resources and materials according to their needs. Finally the last yet important issue I’d like to highlight here is of people, since, these are special and inclusive learners, so people assume that they can’t do anything or grow in life as they don’t have any skills or abilities, which also contributes to their barriers to accessibility to inclusive education. Taking these barriers into consideration, I request you to please highlight them through your newspaper, so that people can be aware and have knowledge about the difficulties of the inclusive learners, and contribute to solve them and make it easier for the inclusive learners to achieve their learning goals. Thanking You Yours sincerely, Rishaeel Gul Student of SMIU, Education department.
