CHARLOTTE, late 20s, British, looks out the window. She's wearing a long, elegant dress. She gives off a calm and poised vibe.
Her eyes are fixated on the Juárez/El Paso skyline outside. The houses in the neighborhood. City lights. The Franklin and Juárez mountains.
EMILIANO, late 20s, Mexican, walks into the room. He's a tad less formal in an untucked long-sleeved shirt, khakis and shiny shoes. He watches her for a moment.
Two glasses with twelve grapes are in his hands. Emiliano looms closer to her as he carries the glasses. She notices.
CHARLOTTE How did you say this worked?
EMILIANO You try to eat them all in the first minute of the new year.
CHARLOTTE Twelve sharp?
EMILIANO Exactly.
Charlotte turns away and keeps on staring at the window.
EMILIANO (CONT'D) You okay?
She gently turns. Nods.
CHARLOTTE Just cold.
EMILIANO I would've thought that for you this is nothing.
He gets closer.
CHARLOTTE Always the same.
He grabs a coat from his bed and wraps it around her shoulder.
I'm working on that.
CHARLOTTE So it's not a sure thing.
EMILIANO It's the plan.
CHARLOTTE I can't stay here long after we graduate.
EMILIANO I know!
Charlotte considers.
CHARLOTTE I'm not doing this long distance.
EMILIANO What?
CHARLOTTE I'm not having anything long distance with you.
EMILIANO Why?
CHARLOTTE Do you want to?
EMILIANO It's not my favorite option, but if nothing works--
CHARLOTTE Why is there always a plan C with you?
EMILIANO Because I always need them.
CHARLOTTE Ever wondered why?
EMILIANO Not everyone is as luck as you. Not everyone gets a chance to go to school all across the world. Not everyone gets to be born and live in London for most of their lives.
Charlotte nods.
CHARLOTTE You think you could leave me for a couple of minutes?
EMILIANO I could, but...it's my room.
CHARLOTTE Just a couple of minutes?
EMILIANO Ok.
Emiliano stands up.
EMILIANO (CONT'D) Call me or text me when you're ready.
He leaves and closes the door.
Emiliano closes the door behind him and sits on the floor, gazing up for a moment.
Tears fill Charlotte's eyes as she stares out the window. But after a moment, she runs to the door and opens it, almost making Emiliano fall out. He quickly stands up.
CHARLOTTE It's six in the morning--
They stare at each other for a moment.
CHARLOTTE (CONT'D) You were spying?
EMILIANO I was waiting.
CHARLOTTE Rubbish.
EMILIANO You were saying?
Look, I'll give you a break. I want you to think about it. Long and hard.
EMILIANO Why?
CHARLOTTE Just keep it in your mind. From here 'till we graduate.
EMILIANO Okay--give it to me straight: You want to break up?
She raises her eyebrow.
CHARLOTTE No!
EMILIANO I mean, if all this is such a pain in the ass...and it bothers you--if you're not even considering long distance an option--
CHARLOTTE There has to be a way to have everything.
EMILIANO I'm sure we can find it.
CHARLOTTE Things don't work that way. Something always has to pay a price. Can you pay for it?
EMILIANO I think so.
CHARLOTTE Don't think so. Know so.
EMILIANO You want a guarantee?
CHARLOTTE Yes.
EMILIANO I can't give you a guarantee.
Then why bother?
EMILIANO I can guarantee you one thing: If I hadn't asked you out, if I hadn't invited you to join me tonight...I would've regretted it. Do you always want the big "What if?" on your mind?
She stares at him. Charlotte's phone RINGS.
Charlotte peeks at it: MUM.
Enthused, she shows him the number.
EMILIANO (CONT'D) You want me to leave?
Charlotte shakes her head. Enthused, she puts the phone on SPEAKER.
CHARLOTTE'S MUM (V.O.) Happy New Year to you, sweetie!
CHARLOTTE Happy New Year.
CHARLOTTE'S MUM (V.O.) Oh, it's all right. We assumed you were busy.
CHARLOTTE Is Dad there?
CHARLOTTE'S MUM (V.O.) Still asleep!
CHARLOTTE Say "Hi" to him when he's up. For me.
CHARLOTTE'S MUM (V.O.) Of course, love. Is Emi there?
CHARLOTTE Oh, from us.
CHARLOTTE'S MUM (V.O.) Let me hear him.
CHARLOTTE Um, sure.
Charlotte BLOWS a kiss at the phone and HANGS UP. She peers at Emiliano for a moment. He stares back at her.
CHARLOTTE (CONT'D) You think you could do that every year? With your parents? Only hearing their voices on the phone? Seeing them through a screen?
Emiliano holds her hand.
EMILIANO I...I don't know. But if the only way for me to answer that is being in London...with you...I think I can do that.
CHARLOTTE I don't want to rip you apart from your family.
EMILIANO You're not. You won't. I've always thought my place is somewhere else.
CHARLOTTE Then you have to follow that path. You have to take the first step.
EMILIANO I already have.
He seems uneasy but smiles.
Charlotte kisses him. He returns the kiss. Emiliano runs over to the table and grabs the two glasses filled with grapes in them. Charlotte glances at her phone. She raises her eyebrows.
CHARLOTTE Eleven fifty nine!
EMILIANO You want to do the countdown?
CHARLOTTE Of course.
They stare into each other's eyes.
EMILIANO AND CHARLOTTE (CONT'D) Ten...nine...eight...seven...six... five...four...three...two...one--
Both kiss.
SFX: FAMILIES can be heard CHEERING from the other houses. FIREWORKS explode in the distance, some of them appear out in the sky.
Emiliano and Charlotte stop kissing. She digs into the glass.
CHARLOTTE (CONT'D) I'm gonna be so much faster than you.
Charlotte starts to eat the grapes. Emiliano LAUGHS.
EMILIANO Wait wait, you've gotta think up a wish with each one.
CHARLOTTE Oh, c'mon now.
EMILIANO It's the truth.
They eat the grapes.
EMILIANO (CONT'D) They're all for you.
CHARLOTTE Hey, there's a whole world to be worried about. I'm fine with just a third.
They laugh and keep eating the grapes.
Emiliano puts his arm around her shoulder and both of them watch out the window, watching some of the neighbors celebrate, seeing more FIREWORKS going off in the distance.
ROLL CREDITS as the celebrations continue.
FADE OUT.
