(NFQ – Level 6)
Instructions Answer TWO questions from section A and ONE question from Section. B
Use separate answer books for each Section.
Examiners: Mr. D. Sullivan Mr. N. Morris Mr. D. Tallon Mr. P. McHugh
Q1. (a) List four advantages of Electro-Pneumatics, compared with ordinary pneumatic systems.
(8 Marks) (b) State which types of sensors would be used to distinguish between black and white plastic parts and also between plastic and metal parts. (6 Marks) (c) Sketch and describe a Reed Switch as used in electro-pneumatics. (6 marks)
Q2. (a) List the sequence of operations for the electro-pneumatic sequence shown in Fig2.
(8 Marks) (b) Divide the sequence into groups, stating how many groups there are. ( marks) (c) Prepare a Logic Symbols diagram for the following Boolean equation. (S1+S2+S3).S4 = K1 (6 Marks)
Q3. (a) Sketch a PLC ladder diagram to produce the following sequence
A+B+B-A-C+C- (10 marks) (b) Sketch and describe a Shift Register, used within a PLC. ( marks)
Q4. (a) Flow forming can involve Hot working or Cold working. What effects does each of the above have on the grain structure of the material being worked? (4 marks) (b) A cylindrical billet of metal is forged between two flat parallel anvils. The diameter and the length of the billet before forging are 40mm and 70mm respectively. The final length of the billet is 50mm. Yield Stress of the material = 90N/mm 2. Calculate the frictionless work done in compressing the billet and the final diameter of the piece. (8 marks) (c) Describe with the aid of sketches: (i) Extrusion of a hollow component using a moving mandrel (ii) Extrusion of a hollow component using a spider mandrel. What are the advantages and limitations of each of the above methods? (8 marks)
Q5. (a) Differentiate between open and closed loop control systems. Draw a block diagram to represent each. (4 marks) (b) How are linear optical gratings used to monitor slide displacement in CNC closed loop control systems? (4 marks) (c) A bar 100 mm in diameter is reduced to 96 mm by a cutting tool under orthogonal conditions. The mean length of the cut chip L 2 = 120mm, the rake angle is 15º and a feed of 0.1 mm /rev was used. Find the cutting ratio and the shear plane angle. If the axial force Fa = 640 N and the tangential force Ft = 960 N, use Merchants Circle to determine the shear force Fs , the friction force F f and the normal force N in the above operation. Note: Merchants circle must be drawn on the graph paper supplied. (12 marks)
