WHAT IS ACCESS TO TECHNOLOGY AND BIAS IN TECHNOLOGY?
Access to technology refers to the ability of individuals or groups to obtain and use technology, such as
computers, the internet, software, and hardware devices.
Bias in technology refers to the potential for technology to reflect or reinforce existing social, cultural,
and economic biases. Bias can be introduced into technology in various ways, such as through the data
used to train machine learning models, the design of algorithms, or the selection of features in software.
WHAT ARE THE PURPOSE OF ACCESS TO TECHNOLOGY AND BIAS IN TECHNOLOGY?
Access to Technology: The purpose of access to technology is to ensure that everyone has the
opportunity to use and benefit from technology regardless of their social and economic status, race,
gender, or geographical location. Access to technology can have a significant impact on a person’s
education, employment, healthcare, and overall quality of life. Lack of access to technology can lead to a
digital divide, where some individuals or communities are left behind in terms of technology skills,
information, and access to opportunities.
Example: This person can use their computer to access information, communicate with others, and
perform a variety of tasks such as online shopping, paying bills, and even working remotely.
Bias in Technology: The purpose of addressing bias in technology is to ensure that technology does not
perpetuate or amplify existing social biases and discrimination. Technology is not neutral and can reflect
the biases and assumptions of its creators, which can result in discriminatory outcomes for certain
groups of people.
Example: Facial recognition technology has been shown to have higher error rates for people with
darker skin tones, which can result in unfair treatment or even harm. Addressing bias in technology is
essential to promote equity, justice, and fairness in society. It requires awareness of potential biases,
diverse perspectives and experiences in technology development, and regular testing and auditing of
technology systems.
