MANAGEMENT OF ACUTE

PHARYNGITIS

Macrolides, such as (azithromycin 250mg bd)

are prescribed for patients with pharyngitis

who have allergy to penicillin.

 Bacterial Pharyngitis needs a 7-10 day course

of antibiotic.

 Patient should take the full course even after

improvement to prevent recurrence of the

disease.

IV hydrocortisone 100 mg

STAT. It is used to treat severe

allergic reactions.

Clinical effect is seen in two

to four hours.

It persists for up to eight

hours after intravenous

injection.

Give nebulizer salbutamol 1:

normal saline especially when

patient is hardly to breath

normal.

Give IV normal saline. This is because one of the fastest way

to cure pharyngitis is by staying hydrated.

Thus, this normal Saline which is used to clean wounds, clear

sinuses and treat dehydration will be useful in acute

pharyngitis.

Counselling regarding penicillin allergies and suggest the

patients to wear medic alert bracelet.
