Adjustment is a behavioral process by which one maintains an equilibrium among various needs that one encounters at a given point of time. Almost every situation requires a person to perform action in accordance with a set standard of principles in order to strike a balance among various forces. Adjustment is defined as a process wherein one builds variations in the behavior to achieve harmony with oneself, others or the environment with an aim to keep a balance between the individual and the environment. Adjustment mechanisms are used to handle difficult situations. These include aggression, compensation, identification, projection, rationalization, negativism, withdrawal, regression, repression and sublimation. In order to successfully navigate through the complexities of the modern world, we use scientific research tool. Scientists explain how the world around us works and for this they propose various theories that form hypotheses. In this unit, we will study how psychologists use the scientific method to study and understand behavior. Moreover, we will study about the importance of psychological well-being for good quality of life.
